So you all have probably heard the news, the US Census of 2020 will ask respondents neither sexual orientation, nor gender identity. This is a loss for the LGBT community and its visibility. The original draft seemed to have questions that asked respondents of their sexual orientation and gender identity, but the final draft turned in to Congress this week omitted such questions.
Several gay/civil rights organizations have said that this was a “slap in the face” from the Trump administration. Meghan Maury, part of the National LGBTQ Task Force says that this is really sad because it could have given the governmental agencies the opportunity to serve the American people and states that it is “yet another step to deny LGBTQ people freedom, justice, and equity.”
I happen to agree with Maury. The purpose of the Census is not only to get population data but to also apportion congressional districts and determine the correct amount of funding to certain federal programs. How can the government expect to help LGBT citizens if they don’t know how many are actually living in the country? How can they expect to serve without know the accuracy of the total count of LGBT?
Culturally, this does not send a good message to the American people. This is essentially stating that they do not think that LGBT people are important enough to be counted in the Census. This promotes invisibility and silence of the LGBT community, but like the Human Rights Campaign has stated, the LGBT will always be heard and will not be silenced, even if they are erased from the 2020 Census.
If this is at all because of the Trump administration, and I am not saying that it is, but if it is, then I have something to say to President Donald Trump. Know this…just because you choose to not count the LGBT community, does not mean that they will disappear or that you will not have to serve or represent them because you will. You are everyone’s president. Isn’t that what Trump supporters said to people who were coining the hashtag #notmypresident? Trump supporters harshly stated: Stop being immature, he IS your president, whether you like it or not. Well, President Trump, represent ALL American citizens!
And the reason this is such an issue is that this would have really been a step forward for America. It would have been a step forward for the LGBT community. Advocacy groups have been trying to get sexual orientation and gender identity questions on the census for years and were teased with a draft of it and then finally the proposal was dismissed. It is also interesting to note that this happened a little over a week after Trump’s administration removed questions about LGBT senior citizens from the National Survey of Older Americans Act Participants.
My only question is…are you purposely trying to erase the LGBT community…and if so, why?Tweet
