A Word From the Kitchen
by Sarah Joy Albrecht (libertarian)
About The Author
Greetings. I’m Tom's wife and the mom/homeschool teacher to five great children - and yes, I’m “too young to be their mother!” Proverbs 30:25 is my chosen theme verse because it is a quick reminder to me keep pushing, while I try to balance being a wife, mom, friend, neighbor, church member, freelance writer, gardener, cook, housekeeper, counselor… so many things. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and feel very small with so much on my plate. Even though the ants are but little creatures, they accomplish great things because of their preparation ahead of time. I have observed that ants are quite flexible and have endurance - if they have a huge object placed in their path, they don’t stop working! They either climb over it or go around. Proverbs 6:6-8 says of the ant, “Go to the ant, O sluggard, Observe her ways and be wise, Which, having no chief, Officer or ruler, Prepares her food in the summer, And gathers her provision in the harvest.” Ants make for an interesting unit study! I tend to be very transparent in life, as I realize that everything is open and laid bare before the Lord (Hebrews 4:13-16) and that I have nothing to hide from God or from others. Writing helps to hold me accountable to what I believe, because it solidifies it in writing. I hope that what I write is of encouragement to those who read it and that it will convey the testimony of one whose life is not her own, but bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:17-20). About The Column
Be it gun control, education, parenting, or religion - the home is never immune from the issues faced by our nation. In a global community, "Not In My Back Yard" is no longer an excuse for apathy. The proverbial "back yard" is as close as our Internet connection. The Internet is part of our living space and can be viewed everywhere from our cell phones to the family room to the bedroom. This column represents the viewpoint of, yes, a wife and a mother who happens to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I care about the world around me especially because I know that it will ultimately affect everyday life. (If you don't think this is true, try taking a diaper bag stocked with bare necessities for your baby onto an airplane!)In addition to believing in the importance of citizen awareness, I also believe that it is the obligation of the citizens to help maintain a system of checks and balances. Sometimes this means exercising the right we still have to attend a community meeting, to go door to door to recommend a Presidential candidate, or to participate in a protest march instead of exercising the right to sleep in on a Saturday morning. On one hand, the home is affected by what goes on in the surrounding world. On the other hand, the home is also the place where families are cared for, nourished, and equipped to face the world. This is what I strive for in my home, and this is the message I hope shines from my kitchen to the rest of the humanity.
