Me and My Big Mouth!
by Steven McDuffie (libertarian)

About The Author

If you want to skip all the self-aggrandizing stuff, go ahead and scroll down to the articles. They are arranged from newest to oldest.

My name is Steven McDuffie. I am married to a truly awesome and inspirational woman named Leah. I have six kids and two dogs: an American pit-bull terrier and a mutt (the mutt is such a handsome dog, he looks like a breed). There are a couple of cats running around here too.

I am a 10-year military vet. On paper, I am a veteran of the first Gulf War, though I was nowhere near the place at the time. I have been to about a dozen and a half countries worldwide: many of them poor countries; some of them Muslim countries. I am currently in Kuwait, working in the energy industry, and doing research for a very long series I intend to write about the Iraq war(s).

I once ran for Congress, though I suspended my campaign about 9 months before election day for several reasons, chief among these being the death of my brother, David Alton McDuffie.

I love liberty. I hate politics. However, since the actions of politicians so often impede or abrogate liberty, I end up discussing politics quite often.

I am a former semi-professional musician and hopefully, I am still a pretty good writer.

About The Column

Infrequent columns about news, world events, and society from the perspective of a former liberal-democrat turned Rothbardian laissez-faire capitalist.

I also don't consider myself to be particularly intelligent. What I am is someone who has read quite a lot of writings of people much more brilliant than I, then I take their viewpoints (the ones I agree with) and present them in a way that is more easily digestible to the majority of readers. In other words: I don't come up with the great ideas, but I do my best to help disseminate them. I am what Hayek would have called a "second-hand dealer in ideas."

I strive for absolute accuracy in every word I write. If you catch an error, please let me know by emailing me at sdmcduffie {at} hotmail {dot} com and I will immediately correct the mistake, and give you the credit.

It's Not Capitalism
Published: May 4, 2009
This article is a letter I sent to the Pueblo Chieftain in response to an article they ran wherein Monica Moorehead, managing editor of the left-leaning newspaper Workers World, claimed that economic system in the US is a "capitalist" system in which tax-payer money is handed over to multi-billion dollar corporations. My rebuttal is concise but poignant.

Blaming Savers for the Bust!
Published: May 3, 2009
I recently had a discussion with someone about the economy. The person explained to me that people who save money are bad for the economy, and that if everyone saved, the economy would collapse. In this article, I discuss my rebuttal to this person, in much greater detail than I did during the discussion.

Barack Obama: The Mendacity of Hope, Pt. III
Published: May 2, 2009
Obama's record and rhetoric on civil liberties are examined. Obama proves to be more of a statist than a civil libertarian.

Redneck Family Fight at the Portrait Studio
Published: April 30, 2009
Full disclosure and disclaimer: I am from the South. I consider myself to be an unreconstructed neo-confederate (though, not a racist or an advocate of human slavery). I was essentially raised by rednecks, so I don't want give the impression that I am looking down from above at these people: it's more like, I am looking out the window of my single-wide into their yard.

Let's Burn the US Flag, Shall We?

Barack Obama's foreign policy posture is reminiscent of a previous president: George W. Bush.

Free Markets and Business-On-Business Violence

This article examines the argument against minarchism or anarchism that says that business-on-business violence will be commonplace, in the absence of a strong, energetic government.

On Janeane Coulterofalo, Tea Parties, & President George W. Obama
Published: April 21, 2009
Janeane Garofalo recently criticized the tax protest tea parties that were held across America earlier this month. Her criticisms were nothing more than argumentum ad hominem. In this article, I show how she could have done a much better job of criticizing the Tea Party protests.
