The 2012 upcoming Presidential elections will not just be about the economy. It is clear that the Democratic party knows that President Obama can not run on his economic record and instead the DNC and Obama are trying to shift the focus of the campaign to women’s rights. This election cycle will become “The year of the woman” says New York Democratic Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney and I believe she is right on this assumption. However, it seems like this is going to be a up-hill battle for Romney and the GOP. In recent polling in battleground states Obama has a commanding 19 point lead in those states among women voters. A lead that is even surprising the GOP as the party usually lags behind the Democrats in capturing the female vote.
The Republicans can’t seem to obtain the female vote because their message comes across as out of touch with women voters. While GOP front-runner Mitt Romney continues to publicly advocate for cutting federal funding for Planned Parenthood, President Obama’s reelection campaign has organized a Women’s Week of Action which includes increased woman voter contacts to encourage women to support the health care bill among other things. Instead of just talking about valuing women the Republicans need to be more like the Democrats and actually put into action a plan that will attract women to support the GOP.
The Democrats have done such a good job on making women believe that the GOP is against them that they have fueled a false narrative which has come to be known as the Republican’s War on Women. The Democrats are trying to play these issues off as women’s rights issues when they clearly are not. Take for example the recent health care contraception feud that has been going on in Washington. The part of the bill that has Republicans up in arms deals with American companies being forced to provide contraception for their employees within the new health care bill. The Democrats see this as a women’s health issue when the issue is clearly a religious freedom issue. It is this type of deception that is misleading the American people. The DNC also tries to coax women into believing programs like Planned Parenthood are beneficial to the community when they are actually a very destructive force that can ruin lives, literally.
Planned Parenthood prides itself on the fact that they are a trusted health care provider, and informed educator that helps women make informed, independent decisions on health, sex, and family planning. But we must not forget that Planned Parenthood is a business first and formost that brings in over $100 million every year, and most of that money is brought in due to abortions. It is interesting to note though that the founder of Planned Parenthood , Margaret Sanger, was once quoted as saying “I assert that the hundreds of thousands of abortions performed each year in America are a disgrace to civilization.” Even the founder believes abortion is wrong so how can an organization like Planned Parenthood stray so far from their original purpose?
The answer is the Democrats are trying to use Planned Parenthood as a rallying cry for pro-choice women to protest the Republican-pushed ban on abortion. They know that if Planned Parenthood’s funding is cut by Congress then the next step will be to overturn Roe vs. Wade, something that pro-life supporters have been waiting decades for. But the Democrats aren’t dumb, and they are trying to cloud the actual work of Planned Parenthood. By pretending to give “medically accurate” information the organization is trying to play the role of an independent third party when in reality the organization is an avid lobbyist against bills like Public Law 106-354 which required medically accurate information to be released on the lack of effectiveness of condoms in preventing STDs. This rehashes the fact that Planned Parenthood is a business at heart and if more people were educated on the myth that is “Safe Sex” then they would loose business and ultimately go out of business.
The organization also promotes an anti-church, anti-parent message in regards to abstinence. Planned Parenthood firmly believes in the ability of choice regarding sexual activity so much so that in regards to teenagers having sex they say “Only you can ultimately decide what is right for you and your body. Trust the message that your mind and body give you.” This quote is almost laughable. Speaking as a once teenage male, if every teenage male listened and trusted their body at that age then we would without question have many more MTV 16 and Pregnant shows. The fact of the matter is that this organization is promoting teenage sex and implying that what your parents, what your church, and what God says is wrong, and what your mind and body tells you is right and this is an absurd way of thinking. Teenagers aren’t considered adults for a reason, they are hormone driven , immature individuals who are incapable of knowing what is right and what is wrong. That is why they are considered minors and not adults and therefore they are incapable of determining the risks and rewards of sex.
The worst part Planned Parenthood is the fact that this is supposed to be a safe haven for women when time and time again it proves not to be. It is supposed to be a place where women can come, not be judged, and make an informed decision that will effect the rest of their life. Sadly, the complete opposite is true. Many times the clinic’s only concern is whether you are having an abortion or not. The whole aspect of helping you decide whether it is best for you to get an abortion is misleading in the fact that the clinic proudly boasts that 1 in 3 women have abortions by the time they are 45. The clinic also says nothing about any emotional consequences about having an abortion as they are only concerned with getting the abortion over with. Once again this proves the point that Planned Parenthood is a business first, and a protector of women second when the reverse should be true.
The men and women that work and openly support Planned Parenthood are living out a lie every day they associate themselves with the organization. They know that this is not about the life of the mother but rather it is about making a political statement; a statement that tries to challenge the status quo and everything we were ever taught as a child by saying that it is okay to be selfish, it is your life and only you can decide what is right for you. This is the fundamental difference between Republicans and Democrats on women’s issues. The Republicans understand the sanctity of life and the authority to protect this precious gift. Whereas, the Democrats believe in instant gratification and the fact that if we are pleasing ourselves then this will ultimately lead to a better society. The problem with this way of thinking is that there is no accountability and no self-reliance which leads to a society with no moral or ethical code to abide by.Tweet
