To seek Liberty is to know tolerance

What is Liberty and what helps keep our liberties safe.Tolerance

We seem to have an epidemic here within the United States of America…we are not genuinely united. We take different stances in life and instead of accepting that, we seek to get government regulations or bans put on the other persons stance. Sounds like child's play, does it not? There are many people who do not know why they take the stance they choose and this, many times, comes from religion and political affiliation. Many people say the solution is liberty. To most of these people I ask, do you truly know liberty? One must be tolerant of most and intolerant of few.

On any given day one can search the media and find a case for some sort of government regulation. There are multiple reasoning’s behind these regulations that cover everything from civil uprisings to corporate lobbyist. In many cases these regulations occur because someone did not like what another was doing or someone found a way to benefit their professional opportunities. The bottom line is that everyone is different. We as people do, enjoy, and practice different things. America is the land of the free, not the land of some things. Some of the most heated topics in these constant forefronts are abortion, gay marriage, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion. I wonder why it is, we, as a people cannot come to a consensus to agree to disagree in a peaceful manner?

I become ever so slightly discouraged at times because of the number of people who know not what it is they are fighting for. If you listen when people talk you will hear these blind allegiance’s in conversation. This is not to say that all allegiances are blindly motivated. There are many who have understandable stances within a cause. There is a difference between arguing a point because your friends are doing it and arguing a point because you wholeheartedly care about the cause at hand. At that point one must also consider, is it fair to another person (regardless of political or religious affiliation) to lose a liberty because another does not agree with the act, manner, or practice of something? If you are not being infringed on then why would you infringe on another by contesting them?

I hear politicians, all the time, speak about liberty and justice. Can anyone obtain justice without true liberty? I am convinced, there are many politicians, who are aware and are in favor of, removing liberties. Likewise I fear many citizens are too; aware and in favor of removing liberties. Why would anyone intentionally seek to take away another’s liberty? Well perhaps the answer is a simple one: Tolerance. If we could learn to tolerate one another and respect (not agree with) other beliefs then just maybe we could all keep some of the individual liberties we enjoy as Americans.

I think that tolerance is one of the largest problems amongst Americans nowadays. We all get annoyed by something and just because we do, should it be abolished? I do not have the patience to list all the things that would then become restricted. There is not a day that comes with a lack of either the sight or sound of an annoyance. I tolerate the annoyance because it tolerates me. One shall not tolerate another who infringes on or causes harm to others. If another, is infringed on or caused harm, that is when justice may be served. We as people must become more tolerant of others liberties so, that we too do not have them stricken away.
