SOUTH DOMINATES BOWLS, BUT THERE WERE DISAPPOINTMENTS.
The Tide rolled over the Tigers and demonstrated for all, they are the national Champions! But the South did alot more in the Bowl season! by Mark Vogl

In my youth the Crimson Cross, or the Confederate naval ensign as it is more properly called would have been snapping in the breeze across the entire land known as Dixie. In this region of mythical heroes, (Lee, Jackson, Stuart, Lane, Bryant, Landry, Meredith, and Namath) where martial prowess, courage, competitiveness, and audacity were second only to Christianity as values embraced by the people of the region. Here in the South, where towns turn off the lights on Main Street on Friday evening and everyone heads to the high school football stadium for the much anticipated collision between the rising heroes, football is a regional source of pride, and for many, an income later in life.
Years ago, before the Yankee invasion, being Southern was something to be very proud of. Families had associated together even before the terrible war. Ancestors stood together, barefoot, in tattered clothes, riding starving horses, throwing stones when they ran out of lead and powder. Football provided a means to demonstrate the courage and physical prowess which marked the heroes told in stories to boys in bed, just before the lights went out. Jackson or Lee might be the painting which hung above the bed.
Each year as fall comes many of us look at the NCAA schedules and the early strength of teams. The Yankees always try to insert PAC XII teams, or teams from the Big East, or maybe Michigan or Wisconsin into the top five. Notre Dame used to be an annual top tenner. But always, the SEC, the ACC, and the old Big XII or Soithwest Conference had their representatives. This year may be the most Southern dominated in a long time. Of the 35 bowl games, 20 pitted a team from the old Confederacy against teams from the north, Pacific coast, and heartland. And even before the opening coin toss I was licking my chops at what appeared to be a bonanza of Southern power and anticipated victory.
When the South swept the first five games, Louisiana-Lafayette against San Diego State in New Orleans, Southern Miss against Nevada in Hawaii, the Longhorns against California in the Holiday Bowl, Florida State against the Irish and Baylor against the Huskies in the Alamo Bowl the table was set for a Southern rout. At last, at last Dixie was marching. Where were the flags?
B.Y.U. would end the string with a win over Tulsa (could that be a signal of a Mormon victory within the GOP?).
But, Oklahoma would quickly snuff out the Yankee momentum when they defeated Iowa, and the Aggies would get by Northwestern. On my part, there was great hope for Georgia Tech, but that would be snuffed out by Utah (hmmm, those Mormons again, maybe Christianity was going to have to take a back seat? ) Then Vanderbilt would fall to Cincinnati at the Liberty Bowl.
Houston would stun Penn State, and I was hoping for another run. But it was not to be as the Spartans of Michigan State defeated Georgia at the Outback Bowl.
Florida, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, and SMU ripped off wins against Ohio State, Stanford, Kansas State and Pittsburg respectively adding to the thumping the Yankees were taking. The wins by Mountaineers against the Tigers of Clemson, and Michigan against Virginia Tech ending with Northern Illinois against Arkansas State were too little, too late. The final, 13 wins for the South, against 7 losses, some of them in the last moments, demonstrated for all to the see that the South had triumphed this year!
Of course, in the end, the South has been overwhelmed by Yankees. What used to be, is no more. Many Southerners, too many to count, are ashamed of their region. Having learned only the victor’s rendition of history, they don't know how close it was. Too many Southerners have accepted a secondary position in the US. The Bible Belt has not many years to live, as those who practice their faith for an hour on their holy day are infested throughout the old Confederacy. And the rebel banner, which used to signify a pride in the South built on opposition to a tyrannical central government, has been replaced by the entitlement society. Hey, anybody seen my food stamps, I have to get a six pack! I want to get back in time to see this fella Mitt, and see what programs he is offering ...got to keep up with those federal handouts you know.
Hey, imagine if in those football games, after the first couple of plays the announcers called the game, announcing the winner! Hey, they do it in politics. Romney has got a plurality, notice I did not say a majority (he wasn't even close in either state), in New Hampshire and Iowa, and the main stream media, with less than one percent of the nation's people represented are calling the election over. How come they didn't do that after the Battle of First Bull Run, when the Yankees ran all the way back to Washington! How come they didn't call the war off? Would have saved alot of lives!
I see, today we are more practical, smarter, wiser...so, 17 trillion in debt is seen as smart, ...hey we spent it, and our grand children will have to repay it. That's smart aint it?
