The people of South Carolina have a legacy, but is it one they can live up to?
In Charleston, located on the western shore of a peninsula that extends into Charleston Harbor, nestled next to the Ashley River, is a beautiful campus. Iron gates at its entrance, ivory white buildings, many in the shape of castles, are spread across this remarkable landscape. The lush green of a large parade field dominates the center of the campus. The very essence of this place is storybook. Almost every Friday afternoon during the school year, the Corps marches from within their respective battalion barracks onto a well-manicured parade ground. The band sounds, orders echo. You may hear the pipes, calling to a Scotish memory long ago, the kilts of an earlier time prominent for all to see. Gray and white, or solid gray formations come out in disciplined lines to form into company sized blocks. The flash of swords, the gleam off silver bayonets sparkle in your eyes. It is the Corps which fired in January, 1861 against an attempt to reinforce Sumter even before the President - elect had been sworn in. This is THE CITADEL, a place where men of my time, learned to be the "Whole Man." While America tore itself apart over Vietnam, while many peers burned their draft cards rejecting their responsibility to this nation, others like myself, almost like monks, gathered here on these grounds to take our place in the line, the long gray line that is, or was, the South.
Don't get me wrong, while I attended THE CITADEL it was ranked by Playboy magazine as one of the top party schools in the nation. The Senior Parties of THE CITADEL were legendary. And, the electric excitement at those parties, held on a enclosed wharf that stretched over the waters, were energized by weeks and weeks of Spartan living, isolated from the fairer sex. I am neither a chemist nor a biologist, but I have developed a theory that the buildup of testosterone over weeks’ time gives the young male a vibrancy unmatched by any other means. I have never had the opportunuty to talk with women of my age, who attended a Senior party to see what their memories are of those? Mine are few, and very dimly lit. But a smile comes across my face, so in my deepest mind must be recollections of magic and mischief.
But, on to the South Carolina of the present.
South Carolina is not the heart of Dixie, that right is reserved to Alabama. (Roll Tide). But, South Carolilna is a beacon of the liberty and values of the original America, and of an alternative view of America where government, our national government can be as evil as the ones all over the world. In South Carolina, the place where the fighting in the American Revolution finally tunred in America's favor, individualism, liberty, the promise of a better land, based on a better people is its tradtion. Dixie is not only the Bible Belt, it is the conservative heart of America. Much of what you hear on Rush Limbuagh or Sean Hannity echos the values encased in the Confederate Constitution. No, the South is not unique in racism, and in fact most in the South today condemn slavery as the sin it was. They long for the unity of the two races which did exist, but was fractured by a northern liberal agenda designed to create a dependence on entitlement.
Romney's Romney Care in Massachusetts is an extension of that dependence mentality. The prototype of Obama Care, Romney declares the state, and not the federal government, should be the nanny of the people! In Mitt Romney's view, the state will operate the health care system, amass debt for the financing of and than seek a bail out from the federal government. Will South Carolinians see that? Will they rise and reject socialism, the new promise of America. Will they call for Sarah Palin to step out of the shadows and make this her first victory? Will they listen to Ron Paul, and hear his accurate telling of modern reality? Will they listen to Newt, and see in him a man who has served the South before, and one who has a Southern appreciation for history, the founders and their documents, and the need to integrate old values with new opportunities.
Today, the voters in New Hampshire vote. Romney appears destined to win in that state, though his victory may actual signal his weakness. Should he only recieve the support of 35% of the New Englanders in New Hampshire, would that not signal that he won't carry that state in the general election? And not only that, won't Republicans wake up and realize Romney is John McCain with hair!
South Carolina, as at Cowpens, you may be the field where the contest changes. It may be in the small towns and the cities of South Carolina where America's new flame is lit. There is so much potential, and if we can look up and invite God to the table of governance, the dream that was America can be once again. You are a pivotal state. Florida, though south of you, is in many ways, the sixth county of New York City. Yankee occupation has all but obliterated the Florida which joined the Confederacy. In some ways, you can think of Florida as a kiddy Nevada, free of the casinos and legalized prostitution of Las Vegas, but infested with those who pervert the original American foundation.
For America to have a chance it seems South Carolina you must rise, you must have the discipline of your Corps, and the spirit of the men who made America the greatest nation in the world. We were great, not because of our military power, not because of our foot print around the world. No our greatness came from a belief in a Christian God, a work ethic second to none, and the ingenuity of a free people to solve problems at the local level. Our power waned when after World War II we took the role of England; a mistake which is costing us now, and will cost our grandchildren even more. The debt clock is running fast.
South Carolina, to the guns. Stand vigilant for freedom.
