The most recent poll out of Iowa showed Congressman Ron Paul taking the lead versus the rest of the GOP field with 23%. Newt Gingrich plummeted to 14%, and Romney took second place at 20%. Paul polled especially strong among voters less than 45 and independent and Democratic-leaning voters.
The poll, done by Public Policy Polling, confirmed the crash of Gingrich following the last debate before the Iowa caucuses on January 3, 2012. Most pundits are attributing Paul's rise to the top based on the best ground game in Iowa and hard-hitting positive ads and negative ads against Gingrich.
Gingrich joins the rest of the GOP flame-outs like Herman Cain, Rick Perry, and Michelle Bachmann. Perhaps GOP voters – assisted by TV ads such as Paul's “Selling Access” - have just realized how giant a disaster Gingrich was back in the 1990s when he was Speaker of the House, supported socialized healthcare and resigning in disgrace after paying a $300,000 fine to cover up eighty-four (84) Ethics Committee violations. The vote to fine him passed 395-28 and was the first time in US history any House Speaker was disciplined for ethical wrongdoing. Gingrich also took in over $1 million as an adviser to Freddie Mac before the housing crash.
The selection of Ron Paul by voters in Iowa may signal a sea change in the GOP in terms of fiscal and foreign policy as the remainder of the field – Gingrich, Romney, Bachmann, Perry - all strongly hint towards a war with Iran just as the vastly expensive and deadly Iraq war ends. Paul has the only tangible plan to actually drop federal spending levels into the future.
The American Research Group just released its latest New Hampshire primary poll, which also has Gingrich floundering and Ron Paul rising to a strong second place with 21%. Romney continues to have a strong lead in the state for the January 10 primary.
Also in Paul's favor is the possible dropping out of former New Mexico governor and libertarian-minded Gary Johnson from the race, who has consistently polled at 1-2% in the race. It is highly likely all of his support would go to Paul. Johnson may announce his dropping out in favor of pursuing the Libertarian Party nomination as he has been banned from all recent debates.
