Direct Democracy?

Can we maybe rely on direct democracy to solve our country problems?

Now lots of people are complaining that either corporations or the government have too much power. The childish argument has been going on for years. Everyone should agree on the problem. The corporations give money to the government to make them more powerful as long as congressmen and the president help enact laws to make the corporations more powerful. Although that part most people almost agree with; we still argue about it. When we start arguing about the solution that’s where major differences come in.

Even within the same party no one seems to agree on the solution.  What we don’t argue about is both government and corporations should have less power. You might think then who should have the power? A good system would to be going back to a newer version of the Ancient Greek system, direct democracy. Of course we can’t vote for every issue. We’d be going to vote every week! Instead we could still have our system of representative democracy. But get it to have less power by voting on more important, vital decisions.

The controversy in my solution comes in when you ask “What are those specific decisions that we need to vote on directly?”. The most important decision to decide by direct voting is one that affects the power of the corporation.  If government officials can’t give the corporations power, they can’t earn money from the corporations. Then they might actually pay attention to “we the people.” If we can do that much we can almost give all other decisions to our government.

Although we might have to vote on some local issues regarding taxes. In this way we can make sure where our money is going. It should be regulated to decisions that include one tax. Not federal taxes because it would be unnecessary to vote for that if we already stopped corporations from controlling our money. This plan might even decrease corruption. But one of the flaws is that it hard to address all decisions connected to corporations.  If done, this might only affect direct decisions to a corporation. Not things like the "bridge to nowhere" in alaska.

This will take a long time to achieve. But I think we’re already heading there. In my area we had a direct vote on if a new stadium should be built using taxes. It is very important we can controll our country without having to vote for people who don't represent us. Although I’m not a libertarian, this is a very libertarian opinion. But everyone still complains either corporations or the government have too much power.  I don’t know anyone who doesn’t.
