Planned Parenthood is allegedly there to counsel women on various birth-control choices, however one has to wonder since it is the nation’s largest abortion clinic how many times Planned Parenthood counsels a woman into keeping her pregnancy. There are many options other than abortion. Prior to pregnancy, there are a slew of birth control methods, and there is always abstinence. After pregnancy, there is the option of adoption. There are both couples who desperately want babies and women who for whatever reason do not want a baby. It seems more logical and humanitarian to counsel adoption instead of abortion. However, you do not get to be the nation’s largest abortion clinic by offering women other more humane options than abortion.
How Safe is Abortion?
According to the Journal of American Medical Associations, “Complications following abortions performed in free-standing clinics is one of the most frequent gynecologic emergencies . . . encountered. Even life-endangering complications rarely come to the attention of the physician who performed the abortion unless the incident entails litigation. The statistics presented by Cates represent substantial under- reporting and disregard women’s reluctance to return to a clinic, where, in their mind, they received inadequate treatment." L. Which raises the question how safe or abortions really are. The first Study was done in 1983, but further evidence seems to suggest that there were 23 mothers who died because of abortions between 1992-93, all of these deaths were reported to state agencies, including 18 that were reported to the Center for Disease Control. Complications from abortions usually have to do with infection, hemorrhage and uterine perforation. So how safe is an abortion? Is it safer to have a baby naturally and give them up for adoption? Of course it is, in fact the number of mothers who die because of pregnancy related problems is drastically low. According to a study done by the Centers for Disease Control, the number of Pregnancy related deaths is down by 99%, with approximately 4 deaths for every 100,000 live births. The study showed that the risk increase if the mother was over 35 and had no prenatal care prior to giving birth. This is statistics for the United States, in undeveloped countries the numbers are of course higher, but that has more to do with the medical technology in this countries and the health of the mother. What is a Fetus?
Anyone who considers Abortion is okay should read the Mayo-Clinics description of a first trimester. Especially those who would make the argument that a fetus is just 150 cells and nothing more; by the fifth week or approximately three weeks after a woman conceives those 150 cells have already started developing a brain, a heart, and a central nervous system. By week eight, when most women find out there are pregnant that fetus has doubled in size, and according to the Mayo-Clinic “your baby's arms and legs are growing longer, and fingers have begun to form. The shell-shaped parts of your baby's ears also are forming, and your baby's eyes are visible. The upper lip and nose have formed. The trunk of your baby's body is beginning to straighten.”
Why does Pro-Choice equal abortions, can it mean something else.
Some states require ultra-sounds prior to having an abortion so that the mothers can see that this fetus is actually a small person. Ultra-sound technology can show how developed the fetus is, including a face if the baby is developed that far. Some on the right, have suggested changing the term from fetus to pre-born, so that mothers understand that this is a baby they are aborting, not just a lump of cells. Abortion-Facts.com, shows pictures of babies who were saved from abortions giving Mom’s the opportunity to see what their fetus will become if they choose life instead of death.
To be Pro-choice Moms should have every opportunity to choose life, not just the opportunities to choose death.
