Republican Jon Huntsman, Jr. announced this morning that he will join the GOP primary today in front of the Statue of Liberty in New York. Huntsman is somewhat similar to Mitt Romney as he is the former governor of Utah and a practicing Mormon. Similar to Romney's silver spoon courtesy Bain Capital, Huntsman's father is the billionaire founder of Huntsman Corporation.

In his talk, Huntsman pledged to "make hard decisions that are necessary to avert disaster" and referred to the Medicare and Social Security disasters but did not offer solid steps to take towards fiscal responsibility. Huntsman has pledged to continue and win the vastly expensive War on Terror, although he has made references to saving America's core economy.

Huntsman has served as the US ambassador to Singapore from 1992-1993 and China from 2009 to 2011. It is rumored that President Barack Obama chose Huntsman for the China role in order to remove him from the national political stage.

While Huntsman lacks national name recognition and polls have him at less than 2%, Democrats believe Huntsman is a potentially formidable candidate in a general election against Obama. While Huntsman is perhaps the only candidate with relevant foreign policy experience, his campaign will be hard-pressed to raise enough funds granted its start in June. As governor of Utah from 2005 to 2009, Huntsman claims to have reduced taxes by $400 million, but spending rose by 10% annually during his term of office.

Former President Ronald Reagan began his 1980 presidential campaign on Liberty Island as well. Huntsman served his church as a missionary in Taiwan for several years and has seven children, two of them adopted from India and China respectively.
