The Romney campaign reportedly raised $10.25 million on Monday, May 16, 2011. Looking at the governor's presidential exploratory website and Facebook page has yielded little specifics about the money raised. If this $10.25 million raised was cold hard cash during the 24-hour period of May 16, Governor Romney most likely has broken the one-day presidential campaign donation record set by Congressman Ron Paul during the 2008 election season which was a bit over $6 million in 24 hours.
More specifics on the donations do not seem to be available at this time. One must wonder as to the size of the donor base and if the donations were just pledged or the donors actually have parted with their cash. Ultimately, this is all good news for Governor Romney, as long as the money was actually raised and not empty pledges, as no other contender has raised even a fraction of the sort of money that the governor has claimed to raise. The only other candidate that has had any significant fundraisers to date is Congressman Ron Paul. Congressman Paul raised (Money Bombed) over $1 million dollars on Thursday, May 5, 2011 to coincide with the first Republican debate in South Carolina.
So far, there does not seem to be any Republican candidates in the race, except Governor Romney and Congressman Paul, who have been able to raise any serious amounts of money in the early part of this race. Of course, there are many unknowns this early and there are potential candidates like Governor Palin, Speaker Gingrich, and Mr. Cain who could tap into decent amounts of campaign cash.
Until the field solidifies and the race gets warmed up with existing and potential candidates, expect the top fundraisers to be Governor Romney with his very solid moderate Republican support base and Congressman Paul with his money bombing libertarian, tea partying Republican base. One could expect Governor Romney to outraise Congressman Paul by a decent amount, but that could be up in the air if Paul's supporters start pouring money in like they did in 2008.
Congressman Paul's supporters have planned another money bomb for June 5, 2011. Upon inspection of the Paul money bomb site, the Paul supporters have picked this day because, "On June 5th, 1933 the U.S. Congress abolished the United States' use of the gold standard by enacting a joint resolution (48 Stat. 112) nullifying the right of creditors to demand payment of Federal Reserve notes in gold. Historically Gold, Silver and other precious metals have always mantained their value whereas paper/fiat currencies like the U.S. Federal Reserve note have not. Today, while the value of the paper Federal Reserve note plumments, it is illegal for Americans to use Gold, Silver or other precious metals as currency. Is this freedom? Ron Paul doesn't think so."
So there you have it, Governor Romney's claim a fundraising record early on with his only fundraising competition coming from Congressman Paul. Congratulations to the Governor on his fundraising day and may the race heat up and get interesting.

The latest estimate is that the 2012 election cycle will likely cost all candidates over $6 billion! Unfortunately, that's probably a conservative estimate as so much campaign funding will be unknown by the public thanks to the Supreme Court.
