Balanced budget & Gingrich have a history

2012 is already starting up and it looks like former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is mounting up.

Balancing the budget has been done before. The leader was Newt. Oh Clinton takes credit for it, but he vetoed two attempts to balance the budget before he finally relented when polls showed a majority of Americans saw balanced budgets as important.

So Newt has done it before, and given the runaway deficits and the lack of present - day Republican commitment to that goal, his leadership in the White House would certianly strongly increase the chances to get the spending under control.

In the current environment and situation, Newt has alot of advantages. First, Newt is a recognized brainiac when it comes to US policy.  He knows his subject, knows the nuances of all the arguements.  Second he has experience in Washington, and circulating through the special interests which infest the nation's capital like swamps.  Third, Newt is articulate, his arguements are always founded in the history of the nation.

Gingrich has high negatives, but the problems and challenges we face require more than a popularity contest winner.  We need a statesman.

Gingrich is not a staunch conservative... I don't like it, but it's true.  He has moved towards the center since his days as speaker.  He was burned by the northeast, and seems to have adjusted to that.

But, balancing the budget may be the most conservative thing one could do.  If spending equals taxes, than increased taxes are required to fund increased spending.  Since Americans are pretty consistant in their dislike to taxes, if we could somehow get the budget in balance, we could reset a conservative dominance in federal governance.

Newt is not my first choice, Sarah is.  But, Newt adds alot of "gravitas" to the field.  He has been in the inner most circle of national decision - makers.  He knows our nation, and how politics works.  Newt adds to the field, and more importantly to the discussion of what we need to do to get America make on sound financial footing. With Romney's announcement of forming an exploratory committee, the Republican field, if we include Sarah, is shaping up nicely.

Hi Mark,
I'm also happy to see Newt getting involved. He is a better rallying point for the far-right empire builders than say, Romney or Palin, because of his experience in accelerating the power available to the executive branch and in helping to make the blatant use of that power more acceptable to the once-upon-a-time limited government GOP.

No one in the 2012 race knows the potential of the powers he granted to the executive better than Newt, even Obama. He has been anxious to get his hands on it since the 1990's. I think he will be a formidable candidate because of his clear authoritarian right-wing empire building rhetoric. Romney and Palin will still appeal to the more moderate empire builders but Newt will be a magnet for the most firm.

Newt will make Ron Paul's ideas sparkle by contrast. Bring it on Mr. Emperor wannabe. :-)
