With a Nation at War and other Crisis' across the globe, we should rule out electing any President without Military Experience. The lack of knowledge of the Life of a Soldier should preclude any candidate from becoming President of The United States.
If a President is required by Congress (does that still happen?) to go to war, He/She should understand the hardships those soldiers will face.
I have put together a list of the 15 candidates from both parties and their Military service record.
DEMOCRAT CANDIDATES
Joe Biden
Military Service? NONE!.
He might be serving on the Armed Forces Committee, but he has no real military experience. During Vietnam, Biden got a draft notice but flunked the physical exam due to asthma.
That what I am looking for in a leader. Someone who flunks the tests.
Hillary Clinton
Military Service? NONE!
Clinton wasn’t subject to the draft in Vietnam because she is a woman. She has claimed that she tried to sign up for the Marines in 1975 and was told she was too old and her eyesight wasn't good enough. Let's see, 27 y/o is too old to sign up and she couldn't get glasses? Sounds pretty suspicious, but who really knows what the definition of "is" is?
Chris Dodd
Military Service? Yes.
Dodd enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1969. He later served in the U.S. Army Reserves.
I actually like Chris Dodd and find him to be the ONLY democrat on the ticket that I could stand to see as President.
John Edwards
Military Service? NONE.
Edwards, only 17y/o in 1970, had a draft number that was never called.. Yet, he still never tried to serve his country, even in peacetime. Why would he when he could make Millions as a lawyer. Plus, the Army helmet would have messed up his hair.
Mike Gravel
Military Service? Yes.
Gravel served in the U.S. Army’s Counter Intelligence Corps from 1951 to 1954. He must have been subjected to mind altering experiments. That is all I have to say about that.
Dennis Kucinich
Military Service? None.
This may come as a surprise, Kucinich had a medical exemption for the Vietnam draft. I guess he was too short?
Barack Obama
Military Service? None
Obama was too young to be drafted in Vietnam and declined to serve during peacetime. Perhaps he was too busy trying to become president rather than actually serving his country.
Bill Richardson
Military Service? None.
Even though I kinda like Bill Richardson, He received student and medical classifications during the Vietnam War and was never drafted. He too, choose not to serve during peace time.
REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES
Rudy Giuliani
Military Service? None.
This may be a shock to most of my readers because of "Mr. 9/11s" constant war-mongering, but during the Vietnam War, Giuliani received draft deferments because he was in law school, and later received an occupational defferment.
That is sooooo surprising because he is such an upstanding Defender of American Freedom and a Leader in the Push for Worldwide Democracy. Maybe if he could have figured out how to get laid more while serving?
This guy can slime his way into (or out of) anything, maybe even the Presidency
Mike Huckabee
Military Service? None
Even though Tax-Hike Mike is another member of the Warrior Nation (NEO-CONS) and such a brilliant Foreign Policy expert (What NIE report?) Huckabee was too young to be drafted during the Vietnam War and choose to fight in the Army of God instead of serving his country. Soon, he may have his own REAL army and can spread the gospel worldwide, at the end of a gun.
Duncan Hunter
Military Service? Yes.
Okay, there is no doubt that this guy is a Hero, Duncan Hunter served in the Army as a paratrooper and Ranger from 1969 to 1971 and served in Vietnam during the war. His son, a Marine, has completed tours of duty both in Iraq and Afghanistan. Problem is, he wants to keep sending our children to die for nothing (oil) in the Middle East
John McCain
Military Service? Yes.
McCain served in the Navy for 20 years. During Vietnam, his plane was shot down and he was held as a POW for 6 years. Awards include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross. McCain also has two sons in the military; one was deployed to Iraq with the Marines and the other is at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.
No one can doubt his service, but he reminds me of the old guy at the coffee shop who has only his war stories to occupy his time
Ron Paul
Military Service? Yes.
Dr. Paul Served as a Flight Surgeon in the U.S. Air Force from 1963 to 1965 and in the U.S. Air National Guard from 1965 to 1968. Congressman Paul is the ONLY Republican candidate who opposes the illegal war in Iraq.
Mitt Romney
Military Service? None, but maybe he hired some illegal aliens as a replacement.
Another of the War-Hawks, Romney, during Vietnam, received a draft deferment while he was doing Mormon missionary work. I can't think of a better way to do missionary work than killing non-believers.
Luckily for Romney, his sons are serving their country in a very important task. Getting their dad elected.
Fred Thompson
Military Service?None
Fred never was a soldier, but he played one on TV.
Thompson received deferments during the Vietnam War because had a wife and child . That is his plan now too. Keep marrying young women and starting new families so he will NEVER have to serve. Of course, he won't remember the reason for his own deferment and will continue to send thousands of fathers to their deaths in Iraq and abroad
So, That is how it stands. 5 of the 15 candidates have actual military experience. That should start to narrow the field a little bit.
However, I feel that we should give all of the other 10 candidates a chance to serve in Iraq for a year to gain the experience. Then they will be prepared for the next election cycle
Post Script. I was reminded by a reader that DR. Paul has had the most donors from the military of any Presidential candidate. This statistic should remind us all that Congressman Paul is the most well-liked and the most supported candidate by our nation's soldiers. That says it all.
