Why I'm running for U.S. Senate

This year's U.S. Senate race in Arizona offers a unique opportunity to grab some major media coverage and spread the message of liberty.

As many visitors to this website already know, I am the Libertarian Party's candidate for U.S. Senate in Arizona this year. I was not originally planning to run, but the thought of going up against John McCain -- and some hapless Democrat -- eventually proved irresistible. McCain embodies almost everything that is wrong with our political system. He's been in the Senate for 24 years, he's out of touch with his constituents,  and he's bad on almost every issue you can think of.

Because McCain was the GOP's most recent Presidential candidate, his bid for re-election will generate a fair amount of national coverage --  especially if the race appears to be close. And I believe we can make it close. McCain is already being challenged by two members of his own party in the August 24 election, and the outcome is by no means certain. Supporters of his two GOP rivals have already told me, off the record, that they will support me if McCain wins the primary.

I invite everyone to visit my campaign website, and encourage you to utilize the "Contribute" box that's displayed prominently on the home page. I need support from liberty lovers around the country if we are to take advantage of this unique opportunity!

Here's the text of my Statement of Purpose that also appears there:

"As Arizona's Senator I will work to end the personal income tax and cut Federal spending by at least 50%. We must restore a sound money system (end the Federal Reserve Bank), stop bailing out big banks and favored corporations, phase out entitlement programs, and cut military spending. We can strengthen our economy by reducing regulations and providing tax credits for innovative, productive businesses.

"We should end all overseas wars as soon as possible and focus on defending the United States itself. I heartily endorse Thomas Jefferson's call for "Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations -- entangling alliances with none."  We must control (not seal) our borders to make it easier for honest, productive people to enter the USA, while excluding terrorists and criminals.

"Civil liberties have been badly eroded since 9/11/2001. We must restore our lost freedoms and end police-state measures including the "Patriot Act."  Our right to self defense must be protected; we have a fundamental right to keep and bear arms. Anyone accused of a crime should be presumed innocent until proven otherwise. I oppose any type of mandatory ID program."

David, good luck with your campaign. I hope that it will teach you the same lesson I learned when I ran for office as a libertarian and you'll come over and join us in the Republican Liberty Caucus, the only libertarian organization which has candidates in national office and which will have at least 30 winning congressional and at least 5 winning senatorial candidates this fall.

Hi David,
Have fun! ...like a dress rehearsal. If you can manage to avoid spending your entire campaign preaching to the (tiny) choir maybe your message will resonate well enough for you to take Dave Nalle's suggestion, and next time, participate in the big leagues where you can do some good in the defense of liberty.
