Border war finally gets some notice!

Its politically incorrect to report news concerning the American failure to protect and preserve its own border.

Conservative talk show hosts appear to be all that's left of the old American news organizations that used to report news based on its importance, rather than its politics. The other day, Glenn Beck invested a good portion of his morning program to the failure of the American government to control its border with Mexico. Beck interviewed the Texas Sheriff who called on his citizens to arm themselves to protect themselves from the Mexican criminals and drug lords.

Down here in Texas the border war has been equal in violence to the violence in the Mid East for years. Illegal immigration, illegal drugs, organized crime cartels, and the political instability of Mexico have been issues which Texans live with daily. Do you see it on national news? Do Americans have any idea how poorly the federal government has done its job protecting our border?

For all the hoopla about "fixing the health care system," the condition of our border and the influx of literally tens of millions of illegal immigrants clearly prove that it was our inability to guard our own border which was in serious trouble ... not our health care system. Our social and health systems are overloaded because of illegals, not anything else.

Once again this is not purely a Democrat issue. The Republicans, led by former President Bush and John McCain completely failed in their Constitutional responsibilities to protect the nation.  Amnesty is not the answer..it is not a part of the answer. The answer is redeploying active, guard and reserve forces to seal off the southern border. Once that is done, a true national effort is necessary to hire sufficient border patrol to accept the hand off from the military to actually control our border.

This is a national emergency, requiring real national effort. And it should NOT deal with amnesty first. Nothing has been done to correct the cause of the problem, and if amnesty is passed, nothing will be done. America will continue to deteriorate at its southern national border.

The federal government has lost all credibility on this issue.? Texas Governor Rick Perry should call up the National Guard and take charge of the border. Texas should remain in charge of the border until formally relieved by the American Armed Forces.

Beginning with the idea that news, not political agenda, is espoused by conservative talk radio, is the false premise that sets the tone of this essay. To equate mid-east violence with border violence is absurd in the extreme. The blame for drug-related violence lies squarely on US drug policy, which makes it profitable to engage in the selling of an "illegal" product. Also blame the vices of the American drug users - a consequence of our escapist, emasculated society. As to the millions of workers that cross our borders and using the National Guard to protect against this "invasion" - this would be a terrible waste of resources, a case where the "cure" costs more than the problem. If there is a disparity between the value of a migrant worker and a domestic one, again, the blame falls on US fiscal policy and its manipulation of the money supply. We have artificially raised our wages to the point that we are no longer competitve on the world market. Ironically, conservatives claim to be for freedom, but the truth is you prefer a control state - of artificial borders, militarization, artificially boosted wages, and imaginary national emergencies.

The hypocrisy of the xenophobes rears its ugly head. They simply can't tell the truth. And they certainly don't value freedom. There is no way to "secure the border" without resorting to police-state tactics. Of course, the xenophobes don't care because the police-state tactics are only used on "bad guys."

Drug dealers are here because they are selling something that people want to buy. These people are likely American citizens who have a right to buy these drugs and a right to use them. It's just like my Toyota that was made in Japan.

Finally, there's something else that the xenophobes should address and generally refuse to. It's quite simple really--if you don't want pigeons to shit on your car and house, don't give them bird seed. Get rid of the welfare that inevitably attracts criminals, and you will have only good immigrants coming across the border.

Welfare causes crime. It works with American citizens, too.

To equate mid-east violence with border violence is absurd in the extreme.

Why? Because the Sinaloa drug cartel doesn't use Katyusha rockets?  'Splain yerself.

The blame for drug-related violence lies squarely on US drug policy, which makes it profitable to engage in the selling of an "illegal" product.

You are in no small degree correct.  This is the way it works with anything that is illegal: it spawns an underground supply chain, necessarily illegal in and of itself, which typically uses other illegal acts to support and defend itself.

Many rapists will kill the victim to aid in not being caught.  I don't see anyone suggesting legalizing rape to decrease murders - even though it would happen.

To claim that legalizing drugs simply because drug laws increase violence and criminal activity is just as absurd.  But it's a popular absurdity and so people will refuse to see it.

No quotes around illegal.  These drugs are illegal in the US, not "illegal".

If your main argument is that there is no really good solution, then ... yes.  You're right.  There isn't.  The feds have failed to do their job, and they've failed for decades.  As a consequence, they're now in the business of pawning off the results of their failures onto everyone else around - who are not supposed to be tagged with the authority for enforcing immigration law.

Specifically: employers.  It ain't the duty of the HR department to verify legal employment status; it's the duty of INS to make sure there are only legally employable people in the country.  Passing responsibility off to the nation's employers ensures that non-constitutional means are going to be used - on everyone - to enforce it.

The hypocrisy of the xenophobes rears its ugly head. They simply can't tell the truth.

You must have meant "lack of veracity", not "hypocrisy".

There is no way to "secure the border" without resorting to police-state tactics. Of course, the xenophobes don't care because the police-state tactics are only used on "bad guys."

Would that were true, Chris.  The "bad guys" in this case are non-citizens to whom US civil rights do not necessarily apply.  The Constitution was written BY "we the people" FOR "we the people"; it was not written by "whoever happened by" for "whoever decided to drop in".

Currently what we have IS "police-state tactics", and they are being used on everyone - or, rather, they are desired to be used on everyone; at the moment they are only mandatory for those who work for the feds or on federal contracts, and those whose employers are voluntarily complying with the nazist tactic.  "Die dokumenten, mein Herr?!"

A wall on the border - also not a good solution - would work and would only affect those who are crossing improperly.  At least, I can't think of whom else it would affect.  Maybe you can.

There's no good solutions to this problem.  Criticising one poor solution for its poorness and inventing nonsense to explain it isn't really helping.
