Jake Towne's Statement on Joe Stack and the IRS Austin Plane Crash

"Whenever you have truth it must be given with love, or the message and the messenger will be rejected." - Gandhi

"Whenever you have truth it must be given with love, or the message and the messenger will be rejected." - Gandhi

"You can chain me, you can torture me, you can even destroy this body, but you will never imprison my mind." - Gandhi

These are just two of the many lessons it appears that Joseph Stack, aged 53, never learned. For those unaware, Mr. Stack set fire to his family's home and crashed a private plane into the IRS Austin branch during the workday, killing one other person, injuring 13, and two of the injured are in critical condition. While full details surrounding this incident are still unclear, the FBI believes that his suicide note is genuine. Accounts from Stack's friends indicate his acts were completely unexpected.

If Stack's note proves genuine, it is clear that this was not only premeditated murder but also an act of political terrorism, eerily similar to the hijacked airliners of 9/11. After reading his note, it is plainly obvious that this man was adversely affected and bitterly unsatisfied with the over-taxation practices of the IRS and Congress (a theme of the Taxed Enough Already, aka TEA party movement) and government-sponsored crony capitalism (a theme commonly associated by the media with the political left). In his note:

"It has always been a myth that people have stopped dying for their freedom in this country... I also know that by not adding my body to the count, I insure nothing will change... I can only hope that the numbers quickly get too big to be white washed and ignored that the American zombies wake up and revolt; it will take nothing less. I would only hope that by striking a nerve that stimulates the inevitable double standard, knee-jerk government reaction that results in more stupid draconian restrictions people wake up and begin to see the pompous political thugs and their mindless minions for what they are."

Truth is often a bitter pill, but the terrorists who died while murdering 2,973 civilians on 9/11 also had a similar goal; to create a "knee-jerk government reaction." Congress and recent Presidents from both parties have bled our nation of the blood of our bravest by instigating the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars, ruined our economy with bailouts and rampant unemployment, created "draconian restrictions" like the PATRIOT Act which stripped Americans of their civil liberties, enabling warrantless wiretapping of American citizens, revoking habeas corpus, and leading to the torture of defenseless captives. Congress foolishly rushed headlong into this trap of epic proportions, assisted by unwitting saps like my district's Congressman Charlie Dent, who approved the banker bailouts, accelerated the deficit spending, reauthorized the PATRIOT Act, and voted to increase insane levels of military spending at every opportunity.

I condemn Stack's cowardly act of murder and political terrorism. While one of my campaign's planks is the abolition of the Marxian federal income tax and the IRS, the route I have taken – placing my engineering career on hold for 18 months to run for office - is peaceful and logical. As Gandhi taught, messengers for the truth are almost always best served by acting in a non-violent manner.

By erecting a prison in his own mind where Stack's only recourse became violence and self-destruction, Stack has just created a way for Establishment shills to defame the liberty movement as hailing this terrorist as a "hero" as ABC's Lee Ferran has done.

Where Stack murdered, many others, myself included, argue the moral case that the government simply should never have any claim whatsoever on the fruit of an individual's labor.

Where Stack raged about a vague clause in the IRS code that plundered him, I have pointed out that not only is the federal income tax immoral, but fiscally it is completely UNNECESSARY.

Where Stack rants about the injustices of a hopelessly corrupt political process, I have calmly pointed out America's greatest political secret – that a determined minority can ultimately destroy the ability of Republocrat apparatchiks to control which candidates are selected, especially in party primaries like the Republican party in Pennsylvania just did, which truly does make a mockery of the democratic voting process.

LOOK ACROSS THE LAND! Listen to your families and friends! Plenty of people grumble about politics and say they could do the job better, but many do not have the financial means, drive, or knowledge to mount legit challenges to the Republican and Democrat machines that are destroying our nation. This is despite the fact that nationwide the numbers of independents and third parties are LARGER THAN EITHER MAJOR PARTY.

When I made the decision to run as an independent under no political party in May 2009, I was fully aware of the challenges ahead. However, my race is certainly winnable - I am already at 8% in a January poll run by a Republocrat opponent, and the vast majority (about 92%) have not even heard the message yet.

Liberty may once again teeter on a knife's edge in the months and years to come. Whether America eats the bitter, evil apple of socialism, and falls to war, poverty and endless debt for our children is a choice now left to US.

Americans need to hear the truth - a message of prosperity, liberty, love and peace. The Republocrats can only offer more lies, tyranny, hate and war. This choice is OURS. My choice is to rally at the breach, to defend freedom and restore the rule of law and our constitutional republic.

I have faith that the truth will prove sharper than any sword.

I like Towne most of the time but here I have some objections.  Stacks actions may have been misguided but not cowardly.  It takes great courage to sacrifice everything you have for your principles even if the direction is off.  I have a feeling the Tax revolution is going to have much worse consequences with time.  There will me many more hero’s and martyrs with time.  Wake up, the revolution is beginning.

As with Eric Rudolf and the abortion clinic it is clear that the actions did not consider the lives of those in harm’s way.  Rudolf clearly stated that he felt that the people injured and killed were working for the enemy and knew well what they were doing.  He elaborates to say that this rids him of guilt as he was attacking people responsible for protecting the murder of millions of babies.  I am sure Stack had a similar view of those working in this building.  Although we should all understand this view as we recognize the deaths of Middle East civilians as a necessary evil.  I for one am against both actions but the war is far worse.  So before we hold Stack up as a criminal for killing one kind man, we should hold the leaders of our military and government accountable for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians in the Middle East in the last decade.  Furthermore, there are many of us who can closely relate to Stacks situation even if we don’t condone his final actins.  I think if the IRS had killed his family he would for sure be a hero in Americans eyes.  Either way, dead family or over taxation the rebellion is terrorism.  I hope this at a minimum helps the American people to understand the position of the freedom fighters (or terrorist) who have lost so much to military actions.  Throughout this war I have heard countless times that the dead civilians in the Middle East are their own fault for not solving the problem themselves.  If that is true then the same can be said of the American people as our government runs the American people into poverty with almost no effective objection.  Look in the mirror!  The American agenda is very hypocritical.

The armed & dangerous chief of austin texas police says, "trust me, this is no act of terrorism". Well Mr chief what we've got here is your intentional failure to communicate; you and your punk fbi/cia/irs punk  associates are the real terrorists and the people are fighting back as best they can.

Jake,

You know we agree on most things, but, with all due respect,  here I think you missed the boat. Stack was the victim in this case. Not any IRS employees who died & were injured. They, the IRS employees, work for a terrorist organization. If they don't like being terrorized then they should stop terrorizing. Live by the sword die by the sword.

"Men have the right to use physical force only in retaliation and only against those who initiate its use. The ethical principle involved is simple and clear-cut: it is the difference between murder and self-defense. A holdup man seeks to gain a value, wealth, by killing his victim; the victim does not grow richer by killing a holdup man. The principle is: no man may obtain any values from others by resorting to physical force."

                                   --Ayn Rand

Stack sought nothing from the IRS. They wanted everything he had.

Darren I like your comment and it shows the huge disconnect in this modern world where people do not see that engaging in stealing people's money through supposedly legitimized means is a violent act.  Why?  Is it because they don't see the children unable to eat, the healthcare not obtained or any of the other negative results?  So whether you were bullied out of a job for entertainment or merely an exercise of power by the disenfranchised underemployed or whether the IRS charged $1,000 for a child's newspaper route that earned a sum total of $600 in 1949 - these are  both violent acts and they are no less so than violent acts of a physical nature.   So the mobbers co-opted by the bully - who fear losing their own sustenance if they do not co-operate and the IRS employees who are trying to support their families - are they just as guilty as the originator of the crime - the bully or the IRS?  Yet the quote from Ayn Rand here desires interpretation of "physical force."  No ridicule here - if we can tolerate a President redefining the meaning of a pronoun - I vote that the IRS taking monies is physical force due to the power the entity wields.

Speaking as one whose family's estate was taken by the IRS on the grounds that we had a hidden Swiss bank account.  We had no such account to close and therefore could not prove.  Now that the Swiss accounts are being pried open and the proof can be had that no such account was ever held by us do you think that the IRS will practice restitution and restoration to us?  What attorney will help?

The IRS uses DEADLY force to steal from the citizens.  The first send you letters, then they sent you a court date, etc... if you don't comply at the end, they will send you their agents armed with deadly weapons to your place.  If you don't comply they will take you.  If you try to defend back against them comming after you they will shoot you to DEATH.

Yes the IRS is the biggest criminal and terrorist organization and they DO USE DEADLY FORCE if you don't comply.

Sarum,

Thx, & your defiition of physical force is correct. That is if is is taken to mean.....LOL

TRD,

Right you are. You remind me of Edward Abbey:

"Government: If you refuse to pay unjust taxes, your property will be confiscated. If you attempt to defend your property, you will be arrested. If you resist arrest, you will be clubbed. If you defend yourself against clubbing, you will be shot dead. These procedures are known as the Rule of Law."

"I condemn Stack's cowardly act of murder and political terrorism."

I do too. We should make no distinction between the 9-11 attacks, which were done by Islamic extremists, and the attack of Joe Stack, the American extremist. And do you remember Timothy McVeigh?
