Haitian Occupation

my reasons why we should occupy Haiti.

Should the US occupy the Republic of Haiti? When one thinks of the question, the off-hand and immediate reaction would most likely be no. And the reason why it would be no is also relatively clear and numerous: we are at War in Iraq and Afghanistan, we are in an economic recession, Haiti should be able to fix its own problems, Haiti is sovereign and it's none of our business, etc.  But, you have to wonder what's the harm in occupying Haiti.

Based on historic precedence, there is no actual harm. When the US occupied Haiti from 1915 to 1934, Haiti was the main beneficiary of the occupation. Haiti's main port in Port-au-Prince was built, most of the country's roads and bridges were built, and most of the schools in Haiti were built during that time. In addition, the Haitian economy improved greatly by the simple fact they had de facto free trade with the US. In fact, the only problem that was prevalent during the occupation was American discrimination of black Haitians and favoring the Mulatto minority. However, considering that the mulattos were more educated then the black majority, it is understandable why such discrimination occurred. Beyond that, the Haitians did benefit from the occupation.

Now, what benefit would a US occupation give Haiti? When you think about it, there are many benefits for both the US and Haiti. First off, Haiti's devastated infrastructure would be rebuilt, and an occupation would also allow the rebuilding of Port-au-Prince into a modern 21st century city. Second, if the US occupied Haiti, mostly US companies would benefit. In a recession this bad, access to this devastated market would be a boom to the construction sector (one of the hardest it sectors) of our economy would be energized. That would jump-start our economy more effectively then a tax-cut, based on the amount of parts and materials needed to not only rebuild, but modernize Haiti.

However, what would happen if we continue to just send aide and not occupy Haiti, which is cheaper and less drastic then an occupation. When based on the news footage and Haitian history, Haiti will probably revert into some form of anarchy, similar to post-Barre Somalia or Earth in the film Mad Max. Now, that would be a real problem, because of Haiti's proximity to the US. Imagine a neighborhood with gangs of thugs armed with machine guns and machetes, now imagine that neighborhood is only a house or two away from where you live. That is essential the situation the US could be in if we do not occupy Haiti, albeit it does sound rather extreme and unlikely, but do you really want to take that chance.

So, why not? Lets occupy Haiti. In fact, I will go a step further: I think we should annex Haiti and give it the same status as the American Samoa. It would eliminate trade restrictions, eliminate the need for Haitians to come into the US illegally, and would allow Haiti to become a stable area.

Typical dumb and ignorant Americans who refuse to believe that blacks can govern themselves and build on their own.

Who's to say Haitians couldn't have done any of what the Americans have done during the brutal occupations of Haiti, which murdered tens of thousands of Haitains? Haiti was placed under martial law, and Haiti's national bank was looted, and the funds were transfered to the New York.

Get the phuck out of here with this propaganda bs.

I'm tired of this white savior, white supremacist mentality. It's about time you people are put in your place.

I agree with nah. Saying we should occupy the only black dominated nation in the Carribean region is as racist as it gets.

I have to agree with the positions of Mr,.Husband and nah. Wendt has a view as balanced as saying that Hitler was good because he united Europe. The truth is more like this: the USA are a danger to every nation's sovereignty and nowadays next door to everyone. It is high time they are invaded and rendered harmless.

I don't the idea. There is no wealth in Haiti. How would their population help the rest of the U.S. economy? Forced Labor? That's satanic talk.

The only way to generate wealth is through work. If the Haitians are not working, they will only be a burden on everyone else. Charity is given despite the burden, although the Americans  can only give so much sustenance to the Haitians.

I'm not racist by any means, but it seems like Blacks all around the world depend on the Whites.

If they want to be free, it's that simple! They should work for themselves. Only problem is they are too ignorant and too timid to do it. It isn't entirely their fault. They were once slaves. As a civilization, they are recovering from the reverse development of their culture caused by racist tyrants. All the Haitians need is an environment of liberty that allows them to recover their dignity...but if their over-population continues...I can't say what their fate is. Over-population causes an extreme enviroment of competition. Their entire civilization could collapse like their buildings...resulting in total anarchy.

For the time being, American presence in Haiti is a peace keeping mission. Whatever else is going on....I pray for God to keep things straight and true.
