With the beginning of a New Year upon us, it's natural to think of the future, and the shape of things to come. With that in mind, here is my idea of what a New Year's Eve news broadcast might contain ten years from now, as 2020 begins.
In International News: Russian military units and civilian volunteers have, with the help of a bitter winter storm front, held a defensive line in the Eastern foothills of the Ural Mountains for over a month now, and it appears that the combined Chinese pincer movement into the Siberian oil fields may have ground to a halt after some limited success. The Kremlin announced once again that if Chinese troops cross the Urals, Russia will be forced to use its full nuclear arsenal on the Chinese home territory. Following the detonation of a twenty megaton nuclear device in Vladivostok six months ago, just twelve days after the Chinese expeditionary forces breached the city's defenses, Beijing seems to be taking Russia at their word. Military units from Russia's European Union allies are expected to arrive on the front lines to bolster Ural defenses as soon as winter travel conditions on the ground allow.
Brazil has announced that they have followed the lead of other Latin American countries in officially recognizing the sovereignty of the Republic of Aztlan, and will establish official diplomatic relations with the new nation as soon as such action is approved by the Chinese peacekeeping authority responsible for security in the Bay Area of California.
In Atlanta, tribal leaders of the New African government participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at a memorial honoring the 30,000 black victims of the racial cleansing in Los Angeles last year. In a gesture of goodwill between the two nations, 5,400 more Hispanic survivors of similar operations in the former state of Georgia were released from detainee camps and marched to the Hispanic controlled zone in Florida, to be released there. Presidente Rodriguez of the Aztlan provisional government welcomed the move during the tense negotiations between leaders at the ongoing peace conference in Houston attempting to settle border disputes along the Red River.
Domestically, streamlined America's official political reunification with the former Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan was completed yesterday at an official signing ceremony in St. Louis. Negotiations with the Republic of Quebecois are expected to lead to similar absorption of Ontario within the year, leaving the Canadian maritime provinces under the control of U.N. peacekeeping forces stretched thin along the East Coast of North America to the ruins of Washington, D.C.. The isolation of Alaska and British Columbia under Chinese protection had left the prairie provinces isolated.
In tomorrow's broadcast, hear a live report from the front lines in southern Deseret, where LDS troops are fighting a grueling desert campaign against Aztlan probing attacks. And, find out how you can help in the resettlement of refugees from ethnically cleansed areas, just by donating your unused living space.
