So, I got this email. One of those Middle-Eastern / Korean / Chinese / Russian "invasion imminent - please find shelter immediately" kind of emails. The subject line read:
"Fw: [Fwd: FW: Pictures from London ... This is Beyond Scary]]"
OK this is an email that has seen the rounds. Must be good, nobody else copied, right? I close one eye and ...'click' ..._ _ _...
The opening text reads "PEACE ON EARTH GOOD WILL TO MAN? I wonder if our beloved democratic systemhas (sic) a chance against this".
Pictures from the 2006, February 3rd London demonstration against Danish and Swedish newspapers lampooning Islam follow, about 8 of them.. Gee. Didn't see that coming!
Snopes covered it pretty well here, photos and all.
I couldn't let that one slide. I was so sick and tired of the Muslim Threat and hearing about it that I finally sat down and did a little digging. Turns out that there's a rhyme and a reason to everything. Dominant Social Themes (or Memes) abound.
Here's my reply:
They don't look all that scary to me. Most obviously, they're hiding their faces. I asked a few muslim friends why they would do that...
"Why would anyone who saying he is fighting for the truth hide his face? What has he done to hide his face? Only a tuugo [pirate or thief] hides his face so that no one will recognise him the morning while he steals at night."
"Because they are cowards and assassins."
"Open to quran and the books of hadiths and give us examples of companions hiding their faces? You will never find it because they had nothing to hide they were on haqq (wisdom or responsibility) and feared no one but allah."
Certainly their own people have no respect for them.
This demonstration took place on February 3, 2006 and was a reaction to the cartoons lampooning Islam in a Danish (and later Swedish) newspaper:
So here we have a cartoon, a few radical Islamic clerics in England whip up some 700 hotheads (out of how many million Muslim immigrants in the UK?) and 3 years later we are still hearing about this 'religion of peace'? The gift that just keeps on giving...
Many of us see it as another example of the 'generational control' function that exists within most (if not all) societies. From the Daily bell:
"The trick, then, is to create a state where the people "buy into" whatever cultural and judicial system is erected. In fact, there are three main pillars to this sort of control: government itself, media and religion. If people believe in their system of government and its fairness, if the mainstream media confirms the belief system and if the spiritual elements of a society support the furniture as well, then the overall society is apt to be controlled, passive and obedient. Why shouldn't it be?"
I don't think they're scary. Misguided, misled, ignorant, immature, I could even make a case for immoral and corrupt. Scary? They have no idea how stupid they look.
