The Coming Collapse of American Society
America is changing, and not for the better. The traditional American work ethic is on it's death bed, and it threatens to bring the great American meritocracy with it. At the same time, our Judeo-Christian morals and ethics are constantly being eroded, which is spiritually bankrupting the nation. by Alexander Massa

Over the past several decades, we have witnessed in America a great shift. An all-encompassing shift, involving morality, ethics, politics, and religion. In America today, cynicism reigns supreme. Long gone are the days of heady optimism and hope for the future. That can-do American spirit seems to have been replaced by a new American spirit comprised of laziness, immorality, and narcissism.
It must be kept in mind that in any republic, when the meritocracy begins to crumble, so too does the nation as a whole. Neither America, nor any other nation, can survive as a viable and robust republic when it's meritocracy has been replaced by nepotism and corruption. America is wholly and fully corrupt - economically, politically, and most importantly, spiritually.
America originally started out as a land of limitless opportunity; no peak was unconquerable and no goal was unattainable. That, however, has changed, and not for the better. The American work ethic, originally robust and healthy, has collapsed. Nowadays, Americans are always searching in vain for the easy way out; the quick-fix and instant gratification. People today seem to act almost hostile towards the idea of working hard to achieve goals and acquire wealth. After all, they would say, working hard is for suckers. Why work hard when you can cheat, lie, and steal your way to the same end result. It's so much easier, they would tell you.
Yes, perhaps it would be easier. And yes, it most certainly would be quicker. But does that mean it should be done? Does that mean that it is a right and moral thing to do; to cheat, steal, and lie? The answer to that is an absolute and unequivocal "no". Why? Because it is wrong - plain and simple. Corruption is evil and damnable. Anyone with a conscience could tell you that. However, Americans seem to have lost their conscience in their never-ending quest for wealth. People seem to be more than willing to cast all things aside, whether they be morals, patriotism, or even their own families, in order to acquire material fortunes. While many would claim that this is a false assertion, actions speak volumes more than words. Look around you. Divorce is at an all-time high. More children than ever are addicted to hard drugs, be they cocaine, heroin, or methamphetamine. More people than ever before are claiming atheism as their faith. Our churches sit empty and forlorn; the pews are pitifully empty.
What does this have to do, you say, with the great American meritocracy? The answer is everything. All these things - religion, morality, ethics, and politics - are interrelated and intertwined in a complex and confusing bundle. When more and more children are raised in single-parent homes, morals and a good work ethic are not instilled in them. When more and more parents simply choose to let the television raise their children, the children of America rapidly become a band of pathetic narcissists, devoid of morals and ethics of any kind. Patriotism, too, is being abandoned in America. It truly is a sad sight to see America in this sorry state; what would the Founding Fathers think? It seems more and more apparent today that those who shed their blood to preserve freedom, liberty, and the American Way gave their lives in vain, for a cause which today no longer exists. Americans aren't patriots today. Many could care less about our flag, our holy banner, and the ideals it stands for. This can be seen when one looks at polls in which a solid quarter or so of Americans either directly identify themselves as socialists or are friendly towards Marxism. The American revolutionaries and freedom fighters died to preserve the freedoms and liberties we once held so dear, only so that today we can gingerly hand them over to a totalitarian socialist government that we are rapidly embracing with open arms. America, and what it stands for, is rapidly collapsing. It cannot survive for much longer if we continue on our immoral and asinine path of self-destruction. Our economy has already been dealt a death blow, now our society is being dealt a crippling series of blows which threaten to destroy our Judeo-Christian way of life.
As I said above, our economy is on it's deathbed. The sad truth is that today, it is harder than ever to follow the stereotypical "American Dream". It is hard for someone from an impoverished family to rise to formerly unthinkable heights. It was always hard, but it is decidedly harder today because of all the corruption that is inherent in our "capitalist" system. Also, draconian government regulations and tyrannical taxes have made it harder than ever to effectively run a small business. Many people decide not to go into business themselves; it is much easier to just rely totally on the multinational corporations who have been in bed with government for decades. It is much easier to buy everything from your local mega-mart than to buy from the few remaining mom 'n pop stores whose prices are exorbitantly high. They have to be, because they are paying so much in taxes that they can barely survive. Such foolhardy government policies can have a devastating effect on our society, as we have seen. When taxes are raised so high that businesses are scared away by them, the American work ethic takes a big hit. This just breeds laziness, which breeds corruption, which in turn breeds crime, which breeds more crime and eventually the breakdown and collapse of modern society. It all starts with the destruction of the work ethic. Then religion and morality are broken down. One by one, through government folly and the ineptitude of the general public, the pillars of society fall until the society itself crumbles as a result of it's foundation being pulled from under it.
Americans should be ashamed of themselves. They should be ashamed of their hostility towards morality and religion, first and foremost. Today in America it has become almost second-nature to criticize anyone who professes to have a faith in God or who dares to challenge the almighty, albeit unproven, theory of evolution. Americans as a whole should also be ashamed that they let this country fall so low morally. More children than ever before are abusing drugs and their own bodies, and they do it with no shame, which is by far the worst part of it. In the past, one was publicly castigated for being a drunkard or a drug addict. Today, it seems that these types are being glorified and raised up as role models. No longer do they hang their heads in shame. Rather, they hold them up high and proclaim themselves just and moral people. Such craziness is simply a symptom of a much greater problem; the death of the work ethic, and thus, the meritocracy. And as we know, when the meritocracy falls, so does the Republic, and in time, America, too.
We can work now to stem the tide, but it is yet to be seen whether or not it is too late to do anything to preserve the Republic. Sadly, it may be simply too late to avert the inevitable fall of America as a significant world power. We can only hope that it is not and pray to God to save our dying Republic and restore it to it's former glory.

That was just a general comment on my part, Alexander. Not directed at you specifically. I found you article to be excellent. My opinion is that America is under the judgment of God. Isaiah tells us this:
Isa 3:4 KJV - And I will give children [to be] their princes, and babes shall rule over them.
Isa 3:5 KJV - And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.
Isa 3:11 KJV - Woe unto the wicked! [it shall be] ill [with him]: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.
Isa 3:12 KJV - [As for] my people, children [are] their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause [thee] to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.
The fact that our leaders seem to have lost their minds, and their spines; the fact that the voices of God have fallen silent in the public forum - all this confirms to me that we are experiencing judgment. But God will work all things to the good of those that love him.
you talk about the downfall of religion being a reason for the collapse of our country. I disagree with you on two fronts. 1) we are one of the most religious countries left on the planet. A lot more religious than the continually prospering continent of Europe. 2) what the hell does a lack of religion have to do with morals? Am I to understand that someone who questions a collection of stories written by men in order to explain the mysteries of the universe around them is amoral? really? these are men who didn't know what a cell was, probably thought the world was flat and that the sun revolved around it. And in this modern day of enlightenment you turn to them for all of your answers? These same people might burn you at the stake for a simple misunderstood question, but you think they should guide your morales? I know it's really easy to look out at the world, realize it doesn't meet your expectations, and call it amoral, evil, and on a downward spiral, but maybe you need to look within for the answer before you so violently condemn those outside for not providing it.
also, you make a point of stating that the theory of evolution is unproven. Has the bible been proven? I think not, but somehow the idea that life is a slow progression from simplicity to complexity makes a lot more sense than a magic being saying "Poof! you exist now!"
To end on a positive note, I do agree that government taxes are rediculous and a detterent to what was supposed to be free interprise. I also agree that there is a lot of corruption, but then, there has always been, and always will be corruption. I feel that if you left what is entirely based on an individual's faith out of an otherwise logical paper, it would be quite flawless. good luck in your future endeavors.
Humanist to the end,
Daniel.
