Definitions: Demagogue; A person who tries to stir up the people by appeals to emotion, prejudice, etc. in order to win them over quickly and so gain power (Websters Dictionary). Democracy; 1. government in which the people hold the ruling power either directly or through elected representatives; rule by the ruled. 2. a country, state, etc. with such government. 3. majority rule. 4. the principle of equality of rights, opportunity, and treatment, or the practice of this principle. 5. the common people, esp. as the wielders of political power. (Websters Dictionary).
During every Presidential inauguration I here someone say, "The greatest attribute of America, and proof that democracy works, is the peaceful transfer of power. "When I hear this I wonder, does democracy work?, or have we simply elected a demagogue?
Hitler was in effect democratically elected, but history has proven him to have been a demagogue. This is an inherent danger in a Democracy/Republic.
I am not accusing President Obama of being a demagogue. (I will reserve that for the end of his presidency, if in fact it applies.) However, I want to use his election as an example of how easy it could happen. The number of voters who supported, and voted him into office, on the premise of change and hope, was to say the least astounding, given that half of Americans are cynics and the other half are apathetic, and a great number are both.
The Republican party has been practicing demagoguery since the supreme court ruled on abortion. (Roe v Wade) Whenever votes or donations are needed they play the abortion card.
Other issues that have become victims of demagoguery are, illegal immigration, entitlements, national security, etc. You get the idea. Though Some politicians may be earnest, most have no intention of ever changing anything, unless overwhelming public outcry demands it. After all, who is going to kill the sacred cow? All that matters is getting elected or re-elected and obtaining or keeping power and influence.
Cunning and deliberate manipulation of the media is a necessary factor. Without a propaganda machine, demagoguery would be a difficult prospect. It doesn't matter if it's true or not, say it loud, say it often, and keep saying it, until it is believed as truth. This is the modern strategy of politicians (talking points). I have to give credit to the Republican party it has made a successful science of demagoguery, the democrats are not as effective, they are the only parties powerful enough to monopolize the propaganda machine. When you come right down to it, there is really no difference between them they serve the same master, "Money ".
American elections in the 21st century, democracy or demagoguery? You decide. I say beware.
I'm just say'n
