New York Times Takes a Crack at Smearing Ron Paul

Virginia Heffernan took a chance at connecting Ron Paul to racist groups. She should have done just a little more research.

A couple of days ago, I posted a rebuttal to the American Thinker and Little Green Footballs smear articles about Ron Paul's imaginary meetings with white supremacists. It was enough that the "corroborating evidence" didn’t even border on circumstantial, but there have been several developments since that completely rebut the whole story. I once believed American Thinker was unrelenting in its disdain for Ron Paul, but I was wrong. In fact, they updated their post three times with information that more-or-less  disproved the entire story.

It looks as though Virginia Heffernan and the New York Times have stepped into the fray, apparently unwitting of or uninterested in these recent developments. Heffernan’s story quoted the same post by Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs, which cited a forum post by Bill White, a Commander of the American National Socialist Worker’s Party and a white supremacist. Like the original American Thinker article, Heffernan ignored Charles Johnson’s and Little Green Footballs’ admonition to take everything with a grain of salt.

Here are the alleged facts. Bill White, a persona non grata in the white supremacist movement, claimed that Ron Paul had been at some dinners that were originally organized by Pat Buchanan and where several members of white supremacist groups also attended. That’s pretty much the long and the short of it. Oh…they also met on Wednesdays. The only really provocative part of White’s post was his tone. He claimed that he was exposing Ron Paul’s "extensive involvement in white nationalism", but provided no evidence.

With such a serious accusation and no real facts to work with, one might think Heffernan would have looked into this before she dragged the New York Times in. Instead, she provided nothing more than the claim that Little Green Footballs made up for a lack of real evidence by starting its "due diligence". If by "started", she means "not adequately completed", then she is correct. The first sentence of Little Green Football's page warns, "Take this one with a grain of salt, please" and it adds three links to "corroborating evidence". The links amount to nothing but an easy condemnation of White’s claim.

Here is the real damning evidence against Heffernan's and The New York Times' integrity. It comes from American Thinker’s three updates to its original smear, of all places. This is a mark of honesty on the part of the Thinker, so Lifson and the Thinker should get credit. The first update includes a quote and a link, which demonstrate that Bill White has a patchy history with the truth. The second update includes a link that disproves the Tara Thai-on-Wednesdays connection. The third is a quote from Peter Gemma, who ran the dinners. He claimed that he saw neither Paul nor White at any meetings. Unless it is an indictment to eat at a popular restaurant that a white supremacist may or may not have eaten at some other time, this whole discussion is hysterical. Thank you American Thinker for showing Heffernan what real due diligence looks like.

Being a student of a profession that uses the term ‘due diligence’ regularly, a few other legal terms come to my mind, like "libel". By ignoring Charles Johnson’s warning not take the post too seriously and by posting that more than one supremacist made the claim, I believe Heffernan has come dangerously close to committing libel.

Admittedly, she posts under the guise of disinterested observer, but she observed more than she was entitled to. For instance she says, "Ron Paul…seems to have Nazi troubles, as in they’re saying he’s one of them." Heffernan replaced singular ‘he’ with plural "they", probably to compensate for a lack of sensation. Only one white supremacist actually made this claim: the discredited attention-mongerer, Bill White. The second supremacist that she cited was Don Black, who explicitly said Paul is not "one of them". The scales of justice could tip on that alone.

Since Heffernan saw fit to post about Paul’s ‘extensive ties’ to racism instead of his extensive abilities to raise more funds than any other Republican, I suppose I should explain that Paul is in a wonderful position to retain the most expensive libel lawyers on the planet. I suppose that I should also mention that, unlike in the T.V. critic world, it's wise to check facts before posting something political, but alas...she is a professional.

Her FRAUD has been posted for a full 21 hours now, and still, she's approved ZERO COMMENTS. And is it any wonder why? It tells me — like you said, Griz — that she is indeed more than just a disinterested observer. She seems to be very interested in getting thousands of views from Google searches alone, and not allowing those readers the benefit of seeing her sophomoric FRAUD debunked many times over in the comments section. It is very much a calculated job. She is another bottom-feeding smear-artist FRAUD.

From LewRockwell.com:

"The NY Times smear of Ron Paul by its Medium columnist garnered a lot of attention. But the hundreds of comments submitted turned out to be unfit to print. There are no comments online! Ignore those people and they'll go away? In a sense. Just like your readers. Hey, Times. This only diminishes you more. Of course, having thought of themselves as Olympian co-rulers, they can't stand feedback from actual people who expose their lies. And to think I subscribed to the paper version for years! (Now I seldom look at its website.)"

From AntiWar.com blog:

"Yeah, the Paul supporters have so far dominated Youtube and the internet in general, where their movement was born, but we’ll show them: Heffernan posts a video by one Mike Fluggenock, a shrill leftist propganda short that focuses not on Paul’s positions but on two or three individuals in a crowd of some 5,000 at a rally in Philadelphia.

"What’s interesting about Senor Fluggenock, however, isn’t his skills as a film-maker, or even as a propagandist, but the fact that he was one of six American 'artists' to make contributions to Iranian President Ahmadinejad’s Holocaust cartoon contest. Here it is.

"Gee, I don’t wonder that Fluggenock’s entry didn’t place. That is kind of heavy-handed, even for the Iranians. After all, is the evil of the Holocaust really equivalent to the admittedly brutal Israeli occupation? I haven’t noticed the Israelis killing 6 million Palestinians in extermination chambers, but I’m sure this is just an oversight on my part. What I couldn’t help noticing, however, is that Fluggenock travels in some of the same circles as Bill White, the neo-Nazi 'Commander' and source of the charge that Paul is a secret “white nationalist. DC Indymedia, where Fluggenock is part of of the 'editorial collective,' seems to have it’s own Nazi problem. DC Indymedia has also been promoting White’s story. Hmmmmm …"

Well if some insignificant nazi types are supporting Ron Paul then I wonder who is supporting the other candidates?

They make a huge deal out of this issue but say almost nothing about the massive corporate support of other candidates and the special interest money that controls most members of the government.

Now that is hypocracy if I've ever seen it.  I guess it's not OK for Ron Paul to have a supporter, who he has no affiliation with nor any control over, but others can be completely controlled by corporate interests.

Well, again, this is why I support Ron Paul.  Becuase he does not allow outside special interest to control him even if some crazy nazi wanna-bes decide to follow him without his approval.

I think Ron Paul should sue for libel. It'll send the message for all the others to make sure they check their facts before writing.

Nobody's perfect, I'm sure if they do their research well they might find something bad on Dr. Paul but again I couldn't neither could Meet the Press. The guy's a Saint in my book.

The comments are up now, and there are more than 90 of them; all of which are supportive of Ron Paul. It'll be interesting to see how long they remain. Even more interesting will be how long the NYT blogger will remain. Ouch!

We don't get to vote on diversity, which means we don't have democracy, we have global power elite masters telling us what will be. I'm glad this incident came up, because it points out how phony the election process is.

To call people trash because they don't like diversity is hateful and narrow-minded.
