REPUBLIC DUMMY!

I would like to address the kids of America, this country is not a Democracy. And if it was, we would be in utter chaos!

You adults are lying to me and the other children of the world. You keep saying right in our face that America is a Democracy. Not only is that insulting, it is also ignorant. If you believe that America is a Democracy, than let me clarify the difference between Democracy and Republic:

  • Democracy: Society where there is total rule of the majority of people. Every desicion is made Democratically, so there is no real code of laws.
  • Republic: Society that is ruled by a code of laws. With a code of laws, the citizens of such society live in order and all is at peace.

If America was a Democracy, there would be no need for the Constitution (The greatest document ever written.) Or any other holy document our founders wrote. Why have a code of laws? All we would have is the majority of people making all of our desicions. The minority would be defenseless.

However, the Constitution grants us equal protection under the law. So anybody can voice out to the people who represent us, and the law will work for us. The Constitution was written to limit the power of government.Under a Democracy, the government (The Majority) would have absolute power. Democracy is a transition from limited government to total government. Just ask any Libertarian of the history of Rome.

So kids, what have we learned today? That's right! America is a Constitiutional Republic, so when the adults tell you it is a Democracy.  Simply correct them.  When they asked how you know that, just say, "The Real Liberal Told Me!"

"The Republic was not established by cowards; and cowards will not preserve it." - Elmer Davis

Thanks for not being a coward, you are exactly right.  What do you think of this phrasing to describe our Republic - "a constitutional republic consisting of checks and balances with both democratic elections and appointments of public officials, and both democratic and special-rule voting"??

I just made that up, but it seems to describe our system a lot better than just a single word.

FYI, might also want to run spell-check!

This peeved me a long time when people said it, because to some extent, it was true they didn't realize how grossly wrong they were. So I jumped on the semantics bandwagon only later to discover that people like you are even further off.

 Consider the following:

A democracy, in whatever form, is rule of majority.

A republic simply means there is a class of appointed rulers rather than hereditary ones. They do not necessarily have to be elected.

Therefore, a republic can elect to be a representative democracy, but the converse is not true.

Republics were also meant to limit the majority's will. But the Constitution's premise is based upon not just the preservation of minority rights, but the execution of the majority's will.

So it's still safe to call the U.S. a democracy, for all intents and purposes, though the reference is usually oversimplified and said without recognition of this fact. THAT is what should be pissing you off.
