Topic: Sarah Palin
Palin, Parker and Prejean -- Again

And the attacks just go on and on.
by Phil Manger
(libertarian)
Thursday, June 11, 2009

Wouldn't you know it? Exactly one month after I wrote here about the common thread in the vicious attacks on Sarah Palin and Carrie Prejean, they both get slimed on the same day.

Gov. Palin was visiting New York to help raise funds for a charity for special needs children, and while there took in a Yankees game with her 14-year old daughter, Willow. So, Tuesday night, late night talk-show host David Letterman decided to have some fun at their expense, joking about the governor's "slutty, flight attendant look" and about Willow getting "knocked up" by Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez.

Ha-ha-ha! Now, isn't that hilarious? I just wonder what kind of response Rush Limbaugh would have gotten if he made the same joke about Michelle Obama and the Obama girls, Malia and Sasha? Never mind. We don't have to wonder. Limbaugh would be off the air — immediately and permanently. But Letterman, you can be sure, will continue to occupy his late night slot on CBS while his ratings resume their slide after enjoying a brief uptick following Jay Leno's departure from NBC.

With Sarah Palin, you see, anything goes. Katie Couric, the CBS news anchor who now has the lowest ratings in the history of network television news, joked to the Princeton graduating class last week that "coming here was a real no-brainer! After all, I can see New Jersey from my house!". This was an attempt to parody Gov. Palin's famous statement, "And I can see Russia from my house!".

Except Sarah Palin never said that. Tina Fey said it while impersonating Palin on Saturday Night Live. Couric, who was lauded by fellow members of the mainstream media for exposing Palin as an ignoramus during her famous interview with the Governor, apparently can't get her own facts straight.

And then there's Kathleen Parker. Yes, Kathleen Parker — the "conservative" columnist who last fall practically made a career of dissing Sarah Palin. Parker became the liberal media's favorite conservative by insisting, over and over again, ad nauseum, that Palin was unqualified to be President. Then, in a column this Wednesday, she faults Palin for not doing enough to try to become President.

Actually, Parker didn't put it quite that way. She really doesn't want Sarah Palin anywhere near the White House. Parker was using Palin's rare appearance in the lower forty-eight as an occasion for yet another attack piece. This time she was criticizing the alleged ineptitude of Palin's Presidential campaign.

Which might be something to worry about if Palin actually had a Presidential campaign. However, as I noted in my column last month, Palin has not been acting like a Presidential candidate. She has been acting like a governor, which, in case anyone forgets, is what she is.

Parker makes a big deal of Palin's supposed indecision over whether to attend this week's Republican Congressional fund-raising dinner, as if the Alaska governor were coyly toying with affections of the party faithful. Parker ignores the obvious explanation: the fundraising dinner was not a high priority for Palin, who ultimately attended because it turned out to fit in with her schedule. The only reason the governor was down in the lower forty-eight to begin with was to attend to Alaska business and support special needs children.

Which still won't satisfy Palin's enemies back in Alaska who, undoubtedly, will file still another frivolous ethics complaint against her as a result of her trip. As of this week, Palin was 14-for-14 — that is, of the 14 ethics complaints against her investigated so far (13 by the state Personnel Board and one by the Federal Elections Commission), 14 have been dismissed as being without merit.

Naturally, the dismissals got nowhere near the media coverage that accompanied the filing of the complaints. Naturally.

Once again, we have to ask if Sarah Palin would be treated this way if she were not a pro-life evangelical Christian who is also an attractive, articulate woman. I think we all know the answer to that question.

And, speaking of attractive, articulate evangelical Christians, we now learn that Carrie Prejean, the embattled Miss California-USA who became the subject of controversy because she gave an honest answer to a loaded question at the Miss USA pageant in April, has been fired.

She learned about it the same way the rest of us did: from the news media. Donald Trump, who seems to positively relish pronouncing the words, "You're fired!" and publicly humiliating hapless young contestants on The Apprentice, apparently couldn't be bothered to tell Prejean to her face. Instead, he left it to Keith Lewis, the Miss California-USA pageant director, to inform the gossip website, tmz.com. Prejean heard about it when Access Hollywood's Billy Bush, who saw the story on the website, called Prejean to get her reaction.

The alleged reason for the firing was that Prejean had signed an unauthorized book contract and had failed to make personal appearances in violation of her contract. Her lawyer says that's a crock. "The claim that she has an unauthorized book contract is false," says the lawyer, Charles LiMiandri. "She does not. The claim that she is refusing to appear is false. Carrie has been in constant contact with pageant officials seeking to fulfill her obligations."

More details will probably emerge in the next few days, but what we've learned so far doesn't speak well for the Miss California-USA organization. One of the "personal appearances" Prejean turned down was a photo shoot for Playboy. Recall that just a month ago Lewis and his former co-director Shanna Moakler wanted to fire Prejean because she had posed for some racy photos before she had competed in the Miss California pageant. But, now that she's been crowned, one of her "duties" is to perform the Full Monty for Playboy? Am I the only one who detects a whiff of hypocrisy here?

Beauty queens are celebrities who, simply for lack of time, have to turn down most of the requests they get for personal appearances. This is especially true for those for whom being a beauty queen is not a fulltime job. I do not know whether Prejean was paid a salary for being Miss California, but I'm sure she had far more requests for personal appearances than she was able to meet.

The truth is, Carrie Prejean was fired because, and only because, she said, in answer to a question at the Miss USA pageant, that she believes marriage should be between a man and a woman. Had she not given her honest opinion — if she had given a standard, safe, noncommittal, please-everyone beauty-pageant-type answer — we never would have seen the racy photos and we never would have heard any allegations that she was "not fulfilling her contractual obligations". Instead, she would have been the new Miss USA — either that, or we never would have heard of her at all.

I doubt that Keith Lewis and the Miss California-USA organization wanted Carrie Prejean to fulfill her "contractual obligations" — whatever they are — any more than Kathleen Parker wants Sarah Palin to get her Presidential campaign act together. Lewis and his colleagues had about as much desire to see Prejean continue as Miss California as Parker has to see Palin elected President.

Wouldn't it be fairer to have a thumbs up or thumbs down choice?   I think the lack of choice you give the readers belies the "libertarian" under the author's name. The article makes some valid points.

Somehow, all of you people think that the vitriolic hate speech that Rush and Ann and Sean constantly belch forth is entertaining.

Dave Letterman apologized for taking the low road to humor.

Do you see the difference?

No? I'm not surprized...

Since this article is about clarifying things I would like to remind readers that while Palin never said "You can see Russia from my house", she did say the ability to see russia from an island in Alaska quilified as foreign policy experience.

The joke was made because 18 year old Bristol Palin got herself knocked up. Since Obama's daughters are both underage, have never been pregnant, the comparison is dishonest and non-applicable. And btw, I voted for McCain.

But I'm not enamored with Sarah Palin.

"Except Sarah Palin never said that. Tina Fey said it while impersonating Palin on Saturday Night Live."

Yeap, in fact what she said something worse:

GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?

PALIN: They're our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.

So, the fact that some Alaskans are close enough to Russia to see it enhances her foreign policy credentials! Gibson's "last couple of weeks" refers to the war between Russia and Georgia, and Palin brings up Alaskan islanders! Palin was aware of this conflict and, like almost every person and every politician, given a chance (Couric's) to clarify her thoughts she stuck to her absurd point instead of acknowledging an error.

By the way, Couric's joke is, besides highly unprofessional, not very brainy either. After all, proximity to a place *does* enhance your chances of knowing how to get there.

Palin trated unfairly? Maybe.  Palin victimizing herself to gain attantion? "you betcha!" Palin an "articulate woman"? Please... This is an extremely biased article, which defies all logic. Thumbs WAY DOWN.

THERE ARE TWO STANDARDS IN THE MEDIA TODAY.  ONE IS FOR THE LIBERAL ELITE WHO BELIEVE THAT THEIR FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS ALLOW THEM TO SAY WHATEVER THEY WANT,  OFTEN WITHOUT ANY  REGARD FOR THE TRUTH.  THE SECOND STANDARD IS APPLIED TO ALL OTHERS THAT DISAGREE WITH THEIR VIEWS AND AS A RESULT ARE PORTRAYED AS BUFFOONS BY THE LIBERAL MEDIA.  AMERICA NEEDS TO WAKE UP AND REALIZE THAT THE MEDIA NO LONGER JUST REPORTS THE NEWS BUT SPINS IT TO FURTHER THEIR AGENDA.

Thumbs UP and WAY UP.

Lettermans comment was disgusting and was directed toward 14 year old WILLOW and not 18 year old Bristol who wasnt in attendance.

Prejean has been constantly berated but Mis America organization because she believes in what she believes. Im suprised it took this long to find a reason to fire her.

as for the comment on Rush and Ann and Sean... are you scared of the truth?

Great article.

Those who dwell on Palin's Russia/Alaska comment completely missed the subtext of what she was saying: OF COURSE they are very attuned to what is going on there--how could they not be? The whole fuss over this answer is a mountain made out of a molehill.

Meanwhile we are supposed to treat Letterman's disgusting comments as throw aways. He can suggest an illegal and vile act then hide like a coward behind the poor excuse of being a 'comedian'.  Well, I for one have had it with this purposeful and systemic tearing down of women.

If the public looked even a FRACTION as closely at all of Biden's dopey comments and Obama's primary cheating and his multitudinous outright LIES, let alone his questionable background, there would be no time for trashing women for telling the truth and standing up for what they believe is right.

Thumbs down.  It is possible to get ALL 'positive' feedback if that's all you ask for, it's not an honest reflection, but that isn't what you're really looking for, now is it?

As for Palin-Prejean (2012 - Put Bush 3.0 X2 back in the WH!...)

Attractive AND articulate !?  surely, you jest!  Palin, attractive ...yes, otherwise Palin wouldn't have gotten the nod from horny old John Sydeny McCain! You think if she looked like Barbara Bush she'd have gotten anywhere NEAR the ticket, gotten the VEEP nod regardles of her reisch-wing religious, caribou-gutting, gun totting 'cred'...?    Not a chance!

As for Prejean, the only reason she kept her crown intially is that perve serial cradle robber, 'The Donald', (who is constantly looking for the next 'ex' ) saw an opportunity to  win 'pioints' w/her and bank some coin on the media hype at the same time. Pure business and future monkey business.

Attractive...?  IF you don't have to listen to either her or Palin (and you overlook the pagent paid for augmentations), from a distance, most men would take a second look at either of them but...

that's not exactly a qualifier for governing the Unites Saates, now is it?

Articulate?  ROTFLMAO here dude!.  Don't bother  trying that line on them, 'The Donald' has dibbs, and the 1sr Dude is on a gravy train so... you don't have a shot, sorry. (not) You need to listen to them instead of staring at them, dude.

A footnote about the Letterman comments.  a) it's late night TV, where the demo is adult  b) context counts.  Sarah Palin got 'knocked up' with Track, promting her to elope w/the '1st Dude' [Track born 8m after getting hitched],  c) her oldest daughter's  and Sarah sanctioned ['winked at' probably] unprotected pre-marital sex (asked and answered by Levi, her unwed mother pregnacy ie 'knocked up'  and the birth of the baby) under the Palin roof, and  d) Most NY, New England kids are STILL in school (AK, they're out on 22MAY), so Dave probably assumed, like i did when i saw the shots of her at the Yankee game, that it was the OLDER (18 now) knocked up dropout not her 14y old younger sister who looks alot like her.  i say there is a 'pattern' and, i FULLY expect 'Palin the Younger' to follow in mom's and big sis's 'foot/mattressprints'.  Stupid is as stupid does.

But, PLEASE, be my guest, keep this up!  Nothing like a non stop train wreck to lay the ground work for Palin-Prejean 2012.

A great article! Yes, I also feel that if Carrie wasn't honest, she wouldn't have become a victim to the gay mafia. The problem is that all this is hruting the gay cause because now more people will hate gays because of what some gays did to Carrie. And this is bad. :(

Carrie Prejean is still the undisputed Queen of beauty in America. She endured relentless assaults by the "tolerant" PC lynch mob for not endorsing and promoting homosexuality, summarely fired by the fair minding challenged Trump and Keith Lewis.Carrie is the incredibly beautiful all American female with high moral and ethical principles. Wishing her well and may God bless Carrie Prejean.

Now, it comes out that Carrie didn't miss any Miss California jobs but they are alleging that she didn\'t accept any of the jobs. I wonder why? They were presenting her with Playboy photo shoots, gay weddings and shlock reality TV shows. And then incredibly, they questioned her participation at the Special Olympics event. I would have fired off a much nastier text message if I were her.

Anyone who repeats the "contract violations" line knows that it is a crock. It is about hatred and intolerance of Christians by the homosexuals.

Do ya thing Donald Trump has tentacles that reach that far??????

Any two-bit manager can force and employee out of their job. Trump should fire Keith Lewis for being so inept that it took him this long. And such an easy target.... a 22 year old lady that has been battling gay activists, liberal media attack dogs, liberal blogs like TMZ and Huffington Post, every anti-Christian bigot and adolescents that just want to see their vulgar comments on a blog. It's truly a biblical stoning.
