In exchange for the right to farm, you promise to give the King a percentage of your crops. The King sets the rate. Today's modern day sharecroppers are the citizens of America, who are forced to give the government a percentage of the fruits of their labor, and the government sets the rate. Welcome to the United Sharecroppers of America.
In the days of past, a sharecropper would use the land of a large landowner and promise a percentage of their crops as payment for the lease. Over time, the sharecropper would save their money from what they had left, and one day purchase land of their own so they could keep all of their profits of their efforts.
Modern Day Sharecropper (You and I) have a completely different set of parameters we must work within. The Federal Government will always be entitled to a percentage of your earnings. They will also try to take your savings via a gimmick known as inflation. No matter how much you save of what is left over, you will never be able to buy your way out of sharing with the Federal Government. Even death does not resolve you, because even in death, they will take some of what is yours.
Today's sharecroppers make it easy for the government to get their share. They have their taxes withheld. They buy fancy computer programs to calculate what they owe. They even E-File to make it easier for the government to collect their take! Can you imagine any other steps today's sharecroppers could do to make it easier for the Federal Government? They would certainly appreciate any suggestions. Best of all, you pay for the programs! You pay extra for E-Filing! Isn't America great!!!!
Even worse, children born today are born owing for previous generations of sharecroppers. They must pay for the sins of their fathers in hard-earned dollars.
If you require very little from the Federal Government to perform your job(a scenario I happen to enjoy), you are still forced to pay a tremendous percentage of your profits for that privilege. Being self-employed, I am also forced to pay Social Security and Medicare directly in addition to my Federal Taxes. Add to this the property taxes I pay, as well as sales taxes, and it is clear why I am here on this planet: To work for the government.
Maybe I am not a sharecropper in the United States after all. Maybe I am a slave. I cannot even leave this nation and take my assets with me. They own me from the cradle to the grave. And soon they will be telling what sort of car I can drive, how much electricity I can use, and what foods I can eat, how often I can flush the toilet.
Does anyone else feel this nation of Free People is really just an illusion? Am I wrong? Are you free?
As I write my checks to the IRS and the State of Georgia, I fear that most of what we have been taught since childhood about this nation and it's people may have been nothing more than what we wanted to hear.
How can we be a nation of Free People if we are never free? Born in debt, we die in debt, and we are forced to share our earnings during the time in between. If this is freedom, slavery would seem to be simpler. It would also be a more honest depiction of how we live. Enslaved to the Federal Government.
Even worse, I am enslaved to people I did not vote for. The Supreme Court, the Federal Reserve, the Treasurer, the EPA, and now even scarier, Homeland Security (who now views our brave veterans as potential threats). I cannot cast a vote for or against any of these people. Neither can you.
So what are we to do?

Excellent EJ! And I would add the creation of money by the Fed may even be greater enslavement, it only harms and buys no benefit at all for the people.

Slaves indeed. Or sharecroppers. Doesn't matter, really. Of course, we're also slaves of the elected officials as well. After all, I've never voted for any of the incumbents in their current offices, yet there they are anyway, enslaving me.
Even worst, the elected officials run on platfomors of tax credit. In other words they tell you that if you vote for them they will return you a tiny fraction of the money they steal from you to begin with.
Mr. Obamas biggest income was from the books which were propaganda for his Presidential Race. If it weren't for the race to the Whitehouse, he would not have made that income. All the Presidential race paid by others helped him with the book sales. Nice loophole into the campaign finance reform.
On a side note:
Walt: I wish your book would do as good as Obama's.
another interesting thing: Obama did not have to pay an alternative minimum tax, but Biden did have to pay it.
And another question: Why would Michelle Obama even work? With so much income, there is no need for that...unless is one of those easy part time jobs with a very high pay per hour..

EJ -
Excellent article. For Joe Public, there were 2 ways out of this Keynesian degenerative "bondage" - to speculate (and win) on real estate or the stock/bond markets. A third way for the more wary is gold and even silver still do pretty decent at maintaining purchasing power.
I think you might enjoy this article by Katz on retirement in the same vein.
