Daniel Hannan: The American Spirit rises and resonates with more than 2.2 Million viewers.

On March 24th, British Parliment member Daniel Hannan posted what has now become "the most viewed political speech in the fastest time in internet history." He is a Ron Paul admirer, and will assume his place in history among the new political internet revolutionaries. He skewers Prime Minister Gordon Brown along with tax and spend liberalism to the glee of Parliment and viewers.

The British political sensation that is Daniel Hannan has become an American sensation overnight. Literally. On the 24th of March, news of him dressing down Prime Minister Gordon Brown began circulating on the Drudge Report and other popular American blogs. The buzz that had American bloggers giddy was that you could substitute Obama for Brown as the target of his scolding, and it would fit like Cinderella's slipper.

Yesterday, American conservative talk radio personalities such as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck were waxing romantically about how his three minute speech (Link Here.) applies to our own decreasingly popular President Obama.

By 4 PM EST on March 25th, Daniel Hannan had begun appearing on American TV (Neil Cavuto's show on Fox News Channel), and his YouTube speech had went from 30,000 the day before to more than 160,000 in about 24 hours.  He went on to appear on Glenn Beck's TV program at 5 PM, and Hannity's show at 9 PM showed clips of his YouTube video.

On 26 March, about 25 hours later, Daniel Hannan has been viewed more than 810,000 times.  (a day and a half later, at 1.3 million, and 4 weeks later at 2.2 million) Quite popular for a politician.  And with good reason.  What he said on Fox News television yesterday reveals and explains his sensational reception by Americans.

He said he backed Obama instead of McCain because of his position on Iraq and the fact that he was mult-racial meant that his election would raise America's stature in the world again.  But, he said he would've rather voted for Ron Paul, and would've chosen him over either McCain or Obama.

Hannan also noted that America is now paying the price for electing Obama, and even faults George W. Bush.  He in effect says that our economic woes are going to be felt in exactly in the same manner as Britain has felt, because our big-government spending policies mirror Gordon Brown's big government spending programs.

Notable Hannan quotes (from his American TV interviews)

  • "The problem with the left and the right is they have allowed financiers to write financial policies, when the financiers are not disinterested in this."
  • "All financiers are monopolists.  All will grab a subsidy if they can."
  • "Every big businessman if left to himself, is a corporatist.  The beauty of capitalist system is that it doesn't let them indulge in this."

I welcome Daniel Hannan alongside American political internet revolutionaries such as Trevor Lyman and Ron Paul.  "Hear Hear!" from this American to Mr. Hannan, in salute for limited government and free markets.
