One-Click Charities

by Dan Clore

The financial crisis has hit every sector of the economy, and along with the rest, charitable donations have fallen. One-click charities offer an alternative for those strapped of cash. With donations paid by advertisers, users can give money with the click of a button, generally once per day, at no cost to themselves.

The following is an annotated list of one-click charities.

New: Click to Help People in Haiti. Donations go to Oxfam to provide emergency relief in Haiti.

FreeRice.  This site offers users a vocabulary quiz. With each correct answer, ten grains of rice are donated to the hungry. This gives users a great opportunity to improve their vocabulary. (For those interested, I hover in the low fifties of the sixty levels of difficulty.) No limit on number of clicks per day.

AIDtoChildren.  Another vocabulary quiz. For each correct answer, 0.25 cents goes to World Vision. (This one has twenty-six levels of difficulty. I easily reach twenty-six, and go back and forth from there and twenty-five.)

The Child Health Site.

Close the Digital Divide.

End Breast Cancer. Donations go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Give Healthy Smiles. Provides dental care for children.

The Hunger Site. Each click gives 1.1 cups of food to the hungry. Once per day.

Por Los Chicos. Food for the hungry in Argentina.

Protect Threatened Wolves. Donations go to Defenders of Wildlife.

Race to Stop Global Warming.  Each click pays for a one-pound carbon offset.

The Literacy Site. Gives books to children.

The Stop HIV Site.  Money for treatment of AIDS.

Race for Children in Need. Donations go to Children International.

Race for the Primates. Supports the Jane Goodall Institute.

Race for Pets in Need. Donations go to The Humane Society of the United States.

Race for the Big Cats. Donations go to The Wildlife Conservation Society.

Race to Save Baby Seals. Donations go to the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

Race for the Oceans. Donations go to Oceana.

Race for the Rain Forests. Donations go to The Nature Conservancy.

Stop Global Warming. Donations buy carbon offsets through CarbonFund.

Tarahumara Children's Hospital Fund. Aid for Mexican indigenes.

Woord en Daad Armoedebestrijding. Click where it says "Doneer gratis".

I welcome suggestions for additions to this list, which may be edited or enlarged at any time.

You click on the mouse and somebody gets rice or food?

This does not make sense.  I am not sure how this is supposed to work.

But I hope I am wrong in such assesment and that this actually works.  I just don't know how.

As I said in the column, this is paid for by advertisers.

Thanks Dan.

TRD, I'm with you, sort of.  I know how it works because the internet and business is my world.  I don't know "if" it works.  There is no way to ever know if your clicks help anyone.  For all I know they could be hooked to electric shocks on slacking workers in Burma.  If they are, well, I'd like to thank those sleepy folks for helping improve my vocabulary.   :-)

This seems to me like one of those chain junk email that we used to get where it claimed that Bill Gates will give $X for every person you send the email too, etc... [link edited for length]

How about sending me 10 grains of rice for every right answer?

I would not mind the clicking and eating while expanding my vocabulary.  Assuming 1,000 grains are in one cup, that's 100 right answers.  If you play the easy level and depending on thespeed of your connection you can get 1 right answer every 5-6 seconds.  So you can get a cup of rice on 8 minutes.  1 cup of rice is about 0.22 pounds and rice is about $1.5 per pound.  So 1 cup or raw rice is about $0.33.  So in theory you could make about $2.47 per hour paid in rice.  But since lunch time is rarely paid, if I can read click and eat for free I would.

However, the whole thing os probably a hoax.

Hey Walt,

How about sending some rice for every word written in this website?

I'm hungry
