The Emergence of Russia The apparent rise of Russia as the new world leaderby Ben Samuel

Even as the conflict between Israel and Hamas grows more bloody, two things have become apparent. Iran blusters but takes no action. Hezbollah does the same. Russia has recognized Hamas as the rightful government of Gaza, distancing itself from the position of the Quartet, that Hamas is a terrorist organization. But even as it has done so it has made known that it does so knowing that it cannot choose all the prospective partners in that region, and that some may not share the peaceful intent of others.
Seeking relevance for the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas visits Russia, first by visiting Chechnya now in tow to Russian governance opposed by Islamic forces, and giving credence to that Russian rule. He asks for Russian intervention with Hamas to quell their aggressive course.
Syria marks time with Russian ships ensconced in its ports. Iran marches forward with its nuclear initiatives with Russian assistance. India, Israel and Russia have collaborated on development of an intelligence airplane similar to our AWACs. Russian concerns comingle with those of India regarding Pakistan and its unpredictable course.
Russia has now mostly achieved its objectives with the invasion of Georgia, and now applies pressure on Ukraine and Poland if only for the American initiative for a missile defense shield. It enjoys a chokehold on energy distribution to both Eastern and Western Europe. It has bailed out Iceland, a NATO country, from economic disaster.
It flies its flag again in the Western Hemisphere conducting military exercises with Venezuela, visiting Cuba with the intent of strengthening those relations that were disrupted with the breakup of the Soviet Union, and passing through the Panama Canal for the first time ever. The last time Russian ships entered the Western Hemisphere erupted into the Cuban Missile Crisis.
In the face of these new Russian displays, the United States finds itself paralyzed and unable to counter the rising influence of Russia. We must credit the influence of Vladimir Putin and his successor Mr. Medvedev, for their reading of geopolitical events and their ability to direct the course of their country back from the brink of failure to world prominence again. They have severely outplayed the American Neo Cons who have placed America where Russia found itself after the fall of the Soviet Union.
The shape of things in the Middle East is about to change, but it is more likely to do so because of Russian influence in the region than American. American relevance there is on the wane as it is nearly everywhere. Perhaps that is good, for the next few years we will be absorbed with managing our own problems here at home. We will be lucky to avoid the division of our own nation into spheres of influence from foreign lands, perhaps the new colonial powers.

Notice that until our proxie Georgia idiots attacked South Ossetia with OUR WEAPONS and killing Russian Citizens, Russia had no qualm with us but they KNOW that the Empire Builders are trying to take influence from them so what choice does Russia have? How stupid was it to piss off Russia? IDIOTS! WHy do we have bases all around the area? NATO is stupid! Taking on Russia is suicide!
Since Operation AJAX and the Sha of Iran's treatment of the people in the 1950s (causing a fundamentalist Islamic uprising against us because these people ain't stupid and know when they are being picked on!) what do you think the Iranians think? Are there many Iranian bases around the USA? No there are many bases around Iran though. All of the problems from Iran are BLOWBACK from failed attemts of the Empire Builders and the OIL Corporations (A certain British one in fact) to take these people's oil.
Russia is helping Iran because under the NPT they have broken no laws. The Russian reactors they want won't even be able to enrich Uraniuam. If Iran is bombed Russians will be killed and you saw what happend to Gerigia when they steppped over the line? The reactors won't be able to enrich Uranium to Nuke Weapons Grade. Look it up if I am lying! Our own CIA said Iran was very little to no threat.
Close these bases down and bring our boys back home to the USA. Stop empire build and trade and talk with people! Make friends with Russia again.
Chavez is another result of failed empire building. Russia is over there because of why? Blowback from the South Ossetian murders by Georgia with US equipment.
The actions of the Elietist Empire Builders have all failed, the world peace is destabilized and the People of the USA are too ignorant to notice.
Like the final word of the article. We need to take care of our problems at home.
Withdraw our troops from accross the world and close down all bases not of USA soil, stop all aid to other countries, stop the empire building, we can't affored it anymore.
At home wee need to cut out most of the govement because we can't afford it and don't need it, get out of all UN, NATO, free trade agreements and set up tarriffs to protect our workes wages and jobs in the USA to raise money for what's would be left of the limited govement after getting rid af all income taxes, get a sound money system, and just stop all the stupidity!
NATO it seems will fall apart of its own dead weight. Russia has moved to fill a void created by the failures of American leadership. They have clearly defined their interests, and have shown the alternative approaches to American bluster the past seven years. America's impotence has been made apparent by its failed ventures into Iraq and Afghanistan, and the Russians gave us forewarning on Afghanistan.
With no one home in the Bush Administration the past two months, Russia has simply seized an opportunity to fill an obvious void, where no one else could dare to tread.
Pax Russia, in its initial phases, may even be more successful than pax americana.
As for America, its capitalism is on the wane. The American government is doomed to attempt to revitalize all of its private ventures, lest the nation fall apart. Banks first, Autos next, Steel to follow, and then eventually the retail chains and other local suppliers to assure distribution of goods to the population.
Amerikan Emperialistic Disease. That is what you have.
First, Georgia attacked Ossetia...not the other way around. Please do some research before making some ignoramous claim from the bought and paid for Media.
Second, to think that Russia is going to stand by when a border country erects a "Missile Defense System" without some sort of blowback is utterly ridiculous. Then you have the balls to talk about them doing some military training with Venezuela? These two are not even comparable. What would you say if Russia started to put some "Missile Defense Systems" in Cuba, Mexico, or Canada. You would be crapping your pants, calling for all out war.
EMPERIALISM IS DEAD. AMERIKA IS OVER. Your mind is utterly weak and tired. Stop spewing misinformation and think for yourself...JUST ONCE.
You make it abundantly clear that a little knowledge in the wrong mind is a dangerous thing.
No one denies the the initiation of hostilities by Georgia. That said, there should be no doubt that Russia had certain interests that could be served by its counterattack against Georgia, and that those interests have or will be served.
(E)imperialism, unfortunately is not dead. New empires are on the rise and Russia is a candidate for empire. Under the guidance of Mr. Putin, for whom I have a great deal of respect as being one of the world's most astute political leaders, a formula has arisen for the advancement of the new Russian Empire. It is a very different one from Russia's last venture in that direction, and bears some resemblance to the efforts of Peter the Great.
