My Speech to the Constitution Committee of the United States

On Saturday December 15, 2007, the Constitution Committee of the United States held a 'Bill of Rights Day' luncheon at the WPB Convention Center in West Palm Beach Florida. This is the text of my speech to the attendees. You can view the video at my YouTube channel www.youtube.com/santoroforcongress

First let me say thank you for allowing me to speak hear today. It’s a pleasure to share this stage with such dignified supporters of our constitution. My name is Dean Santoro and I am a republican candidate for US House of Representatives in District 21 of Florida, a seat currently held by Republican Lincoln Diaz-Balart since 1991. I’ve been asked why I am opposing such an entrenched incumbent in his own party. To that I respond “Congressional representatives take an oath to defend our constitution. I am reasonably certain your independent examination of my opponent’s voting record will prove egregiously to the contrary.” But that matter will be decided on August 26th next year by the voters of District 21. There are so many issues in the 2008 election that it’s difficult to choose just one to talk about. But being a project manager by trade, I always prefer to perform a root cause analysis when attacking a problem of any sort. Webster’s says: The practice of RCA is predicated on the belief that problems are best solved by attempting to correct or eliminate root causes, as opposed to merely addressing the immediately obvious symptoms. I had this very conversation with presidential candidate and Texas congressman Ron Paul at last week’s Univision debate. During the first break, I approached the stage and Dr. Paul came over " I shook his hand and I told him how well I thought he was doing. I told him I liked the way he addressed the economic ‘root causes’ of many of our nation’s woes. Dr. Paul responded “Exactly! Everyone else on this stage wants to treat the symptoms with aspirins or band aids. You have to treat the disease not the symptoms.” These words of wisdom from a physician and a scholar such as Dr. Paul further served to validate my decision to run for office and help him restore our republic. Fixing our problems will not be easy, and some sacrifices will be necessary…but continuing to try quick fixes and blind adherence to failed policies like our Congress has been doing, is only further tightening the spring of economic disaster than when unleashed will wreak financial havoc on the US and the global economy. When I hear all other presidential candidates on both sides discuss the issues like the economy, healthcare, immigration, family values…it all becomes a blah blah blur…they re-hash the same rhetoric I have heard since I first looked at a television set and could comprehend what the talking heads were saying. How can an average American family spend time together when Mom AND Dad work multiple jobs each just to survive? It’s no secret why the family unit has broken down. George W. Bush, in response to a woman who described her struggle working 3 jobs while trying to raise a family responded with “Wow, Three jobs. That’s uniquely American.” Well I think that is a disgrace. It’s a disgrace that this woman if compelled to work multiple jobs to simply feed, clothe and house her family. Talk about a leader losing touch with his people… Young people getting out of college are forced to live at home or cohabitate with others because they can’t afford to be on their own. Runaway inflation, manufactured asset and commodity bubbles, the systematic debasement of our currency, the breakdown of the family unit " these are all symptoms of a much deeper rooted problem. A cancer that plagues this country " and that is a congress that does not follow the Constitution… One of my chief aspirations is to sit on the House Financial Services Committee , which oversees all components of the nation’s housing and financial services sectors including banking, insurance, real estate, public and assisted housing, and securities. I'd like to lead discussions about restoring a sound currency, enforcing fiscally responsible monetary policies and protecting our citizens from unnecessary inflation and debasement of our currency. A man I respect very much recently told me “Opinions lead to confusion while data leads to conclusion.” Upon close examination of this data only one conclusion can be reached: It’s time to elect representatives in all branches of government that respect and uphold the United States Constitution. Thank you
