Becket Fund vs. Wayne Besen. How Becket Fund's new website www.NoMobVote.org and New York Times article has stirred up controversy and the 'retaliation' by Wayne Besen.

Most people have recently noticed the uproar in the weeks following the November 4th 2008 elections, and the massive protests which have followed. While Leo Donofrio brought frivolous lawsuits to the Supreme Court regarding President Elect Barack Obama, millions of citizens are in the streets. From California to New York, these millions have come out to protest the passage of the infamous Prop 8 in California. The Proposition, which narrowly passed 52-48% has stirred up controversy in this country the likes of which have not been seen since the Civil Rights marches in the 60s or Stonewall. Three cases are already set to come before the California Supreme Court regarding the legality of the case.

In the wake of all of this controversy, the Becket Fund emerged on the Yes On 8 side of the aisle. They created a new website, www.NoMobVeto.org, and they oppose all the marching and the signs and sloganeering of the No on 8 side. They claim that these peaceful protests have been anything but peaceful, that violence abounds in every protest. Others counter that the people who believe No On 8 are the violent ones have not read the news story about the two migrant workers who were brothers, one of them was killed over his assumed homosexuality. While being straight, the perpetrators accused him of being gay when they witnessed him holding his brother's hand. In California, a No On 8 voter flipped off the house of a Yes On 8 voter and was savagely beaten by the home‘s owner. While there has been violence on both sides of the aisle, it appears that a disproportionate amount comes from people who voted for the ban, rather than against it. NoMobVeto.com has already received mass acclaim by taking out a full-page ad in the New York Times (NYT). The authors of this ad are none other than William Donohue of Catholic League fame, Chuck Colson (Prison Fellowship), Rich Cizik (The National Association of Evangelicals). To make matters even dodgier, the ad openly states "beginning today, (they) commit (them)selves to opposing and publicly shaming anyone who resorts to the rhetoric of anti-religious bigotry - against any faith, on any side of any cause, for any reason."

In response, Gay Rights group Truth Wins Out, took an ad out in The Salt Lake Tribune entitled "Lies in the Name of the Lord." This ad counters the New York Times ad and states that the claims it makes are patently false, and above all else, highly hypocritical. Wayne Besen, the Executive Director of Truth Wins Out is on record stating "These anti-gay activists are crying wolf on the Proposition 8 protests, but (they're) actually a wolf in sheep's clothing that preaches religious tolerance while practicing the most defamatory form of religious bigotry." Truth Wins Out is based in New York and frequently challenges what it sees as the deceptions of the moral majority. This ad was placed in The Tribune specifically due to location; Utah being the "home base" of The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints (LDS). LDS of course, is responsible for a large sum of the money donated to the Yes On 8 campaign and have been targets of protests and violence ever since. The NYT ad came out on December 10th, with Besen's Tribune rebuttal on December 12th. What effect this rebuttal will have is still questionable due to the release still being so recent.

Is "disparged" a new word I've never heard of before, is it simply a misspelling of the word "disparaged"?

I find it sad that this is the only thing that will get people out in the streets with all the scams going on in government. Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of DOMA but still...
