Libertarian Posterboy: Barack Obama Stupid decisions only haunt you forever if you get caught.by John Armstrong

I'll make this simple. If Barack Obama had been arrested and convicted of a felony while "experimenting with cocaine" as a teenager, he would not be on the verge of a landslide Presidential victory.
But he wasn't. And he is.
Drugs are not bad. Drugs are drugs. They are chemical compounds. They actually make you feel pretty good; if they didn't, people wouldn't use them.
Can your life be destroyed if you use drugs? Absolutely. Is it possible to ever get to that point if you never try drugs? No. And if there were a way to actually create a "Drug Free America", I'd be all for it. But there isn't. And it isn't the job of the government to protect you from yourself and the consequences of your stupid decisions. They're spending enough of your money protecting their Wall Street pals from theirs.
If you use drugs, you probably won't grow up to be President. But you might. Unless you get caught. Then your life won't be ruined because you used drugs. Your life will be ruined because your government decided they knew what was best for you.
If you'd actually agreed with them, you would have amended the Constitution to give them the power to create and enforce these anti-American laws. During Prohibition the gangs, violence, and wealth created from bootlegging was clearly understood to be a product of Prohibition and not a product of alcohol. Today that isn't the case. The chemical compounds are to blame for these issues. Unlike Prohibition, we can't create an amendment taking the power away from the government to create and enforce these laws because we never gave it to them in the first place--they just took it because they knew what was best for you.
If you think this is an article about drugs, you're missing the point. You see, Libertarians often use the war on drugs as an example of how the government creates an enemy which can never be defeated from thin air (think Eastasia, Eurasia if you're an Orwell fan). Just like in Orwell's book named after the year of Reagan's Obamaesque landslide over Mondale, the enemy changes from time to time, but the people hardly seem to notice because they're too busy working to pay the tab associated with fighting these "enemies" and staving off the "crisis" du jour with victory always seemingly right around the corner. And the end result is always the same:
More Government: Less Freedom.
While the War on Drugs is a real life example, it serves merely as a metaphor for what Libertarians really believe in to the core:
Less government: More Freedom.
In that kind of world, someone can use that freedom to try drugs, get addicted, and kill themselves. Or they can try them out, decide it's not for them, and become President of the United States. Just like Barack Obama.
Obviously, people can do that in this world too since both examples currently are being played out despite 20 plus years of an all out war in an alleged attempt to prevent the former scenario from happening. The latter scenario is only possible because the man getting ready to execute the laws didn't get caught breaking them.
So when you see Obama give his first official lie when he swears to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution next January 20th, you can remember that there was a time he believed that government didn't have all the answers and that individuals should be free to make their own decisions about how to conduct their lives. Too bad he's forgotten that at an individual level, we're all Libertarians. He would have been a great spokesperson for the cause. If he can create this kind of following running as a socialist, imagine what he could have done selling freedom. He would have been a great Libertarian Posterboy. Too bad he sold his soul. But at least he'll save yours--or so his followers seem to believe.
