Death Watch

I am sitting here watching the House of Representatives on television. Today, I regard it as a death watch over something I hold very dear: Liberty in America.

I have lived in the Uniited States for sixty-years. I am retired and have a defibrillator in my chest. My personal long term goal is a family birthday party on my 70th birthday. If I achieve that goal, I will set new ones.

I have kept a death watch before.  I was with my father, watching and helping through several years of increasingly debilitating strokes until he died, weeks before his fifty-ninth birthday in 1959.  I was with my mother when she suddenly became ill with a septic infecion and died within twelve hours in 1989.

These were people, flawed as we all are, whom I loved unconditionally.  At times, they disappointed me, at times I know that they did things that were wrong, at times, like all of us, they made mistakes.  Bu their deaths broke my heart. The deaths also made me angry.

I am undergoing the same feelings today as I watch the proceedings of the House, and see some of those courageous enough to oppose the Bailout on the first vote, change their position. and vote for a measure which represents the surrender by the House of it ability to control the spending of money, to the executive branch.

Representative Government and liberty in America are both things of the past.  The Congress has surrendered its power to decide questions of war and peace, and excused itself on the grounds that the President misled them.   They have established as oppressive secret police system in the United States, unregulated by the Congress or the Courts or even the rules of proper bureaucratic procedure, on the grounds of emergency.  And now it has turned over the keys to the Treasury on the grounds that action must proceed contemplation.

Here is the vote today. ( [link edited for length]).    Note the names of those who abandoned their principles and changed their votes after the original rejection of the plan.

I think today, as I did after the deaths of my mother and father of Dylan Thomas's plea:  "Do not go gentle into that good night/ Rage, Rage against the dying of the light".([link edited for length])

The dark night of fascism has descended on the once free republic.  It is time to resist--actually, past time to resist.  I have lived most of my life as a free citizen in a free country.  My greatest regret, my greatest anger, is for my eight children, who must now live most of their lives under, and struggling against the new, fascist America, and for my twelve grandchildren who may live nearly their entire lives in this New American Empire.

I agree completely. Thanks for posting the roll call vote. Happily my congress woman Candice Miller was one of the few who stuck to her guns and voted against this monster. I'll have to send her a letter thanking her.

What irritates me the most is this.....Monday they had a chance to vote but blamed Nancy Pelosi for holding back.  They never planned to vote!  They wanted to wait until they jammed the buyout full of "pork barrel" rubbish.  Again their personal interests come first.

This Bill was 100 pages Monday and today 451 pages full of rubbish.  While people were losing their pensions, these people were sitting around holding things up while dreaming of ways to add their special interests to it.

No one wanted to have this bailout but I think it had to be done.  I only hope it was trying a buyout and not a bailout and a good share of that money can be collected.

rtbohan -

hear you but keep the heart going, i would love it if your mind got angry and started fighting back, and this battle is going to be a long one.  my gloves have kinda always been off and throwing snowballs here and there, but its time for hand-to-hand (or mind-to-mind) combat.  In my humble opinion, that is.

if you need to focus some anger, here is an even more specific list of the house members who switched from No to "Aye, lets shoot the taxpayer in the heart!"

A little horde of pitchforks is gathering at the Nolan Chart page on Facebook if you are interested.  it would be good to see you there, i wrote an article the other day explaining it.

I wrote a post on this bill passing but am still waiting for it to be approved (argh)

Hey any thoughts on this article I wrote?  Time to go viral again?  The Nader-Palin Debate - Is It Time for the Revolution to "Go Viral" Again?
