A Guide to Alternative News and Commentary
by Dan Clore
The mainstream mass media (or MSM) offer news and opinion from viewpoints ranging from far-right ("conservative") to center-right ("liberal"). Other viewpoints -- anarchist, libertarian, progressive, socialist, green, classical liberal, or whatever -- are almost entirely excluded, and many important and interesting news stories go underreported or unreported.
The following is a guide to the alternative media news and commentary sources that I find the most useful as I search for information daily and look for material for my own anarchist-oriented, "news & views", mailing-list Smygo.
Generally progressive site that publishes a selection of material from alternative sources along with original material. While the site does a great job presenting important and interesting material, its format is rather unwieldy -- stories are chopped into multiple pages, but hundreds of comments are still displayed on each one.
Run by right-libertarians, Antiwar.com gives a daily round-up of links to news stories and commentary from the MSM and alternative media concerning war and other conflicts around the world, organized by conflict or region, along with opinion columns from the entire political spectrum. Whatever conflict or human rights issue you might be interested in, Antiwar.com is a necessary resource for keeping informed.
Progressive news hosted by Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez. Democracy Now! provides in-depth coverage of important news underreported in the MSM. The show, which airs on Pacifica Radio and LINK TV, features interviews with news makers and commentators excluded by the mainstream. Democracy Now! is an essential resource for anyone who wants to keep informed on the vital issues of the day. (Daily transcripts available on the website.)
Information Clearing House is a reader-supported one-man operation that does a fine job providing news stories and opinion pieces that "you won't find on CNN or FOX News".
Libertarian-leaning paleo-conservative magazine. that provides a welcome relief from the neocons. Unfortunately, only a selection of articles is available to non-subscribers.
How to Identify Misinformation Some comic relief from the Bush administration, including its own good wallop of misinformation. By coincidence, all of the websites "known for spreading false stories" listed are highly critical of the Bush administration.
(The Obama administration has delected this, but Wayback still has it.)
