A Guide to Alternative News and Commentary

by Dan Clore

The mainstream mass media (or MSM) offer news and opinion from viewpoints ranging from far-right ("conservative") to center-right ("liberal"). Other viewpoints -- anarchist, libertarian, progressive, socialist, green, classical liberal, or whatever -- are almost entirely excluded, and many important and interesting news stories go underreported or unreported.

The following is a guide to the alternative media news and commentary sources that I find the most useful as I search for information daily and look for material for my own anarchist-oriented, "news & views", mailing-list Smygo.

First, a short list of the top sites:

AlterNet News

Generally progressive site that publishes a selection of material from alternative sources along with original material. While the site does a great job presenting important and interesting material, its format is rather unwieldy -- stories are chopped into multiple pages, but hundreds of comments are still displayed on each one.

Antiwar.com

Run by right-libertarians, Antiwar.com gives a daily round-up of links to news stories and commentary from the MSM and alternative media concerning war and other conflicts around the world, organized by conflict or region, along with opinion columns from the entire political spectrum. Whatever conflict or human rights issue you might be interested in, Antiwar.com is a necessary resource for keeping informed.

Common Dreams

Continual round-up of progressive opinion columns and news from a wide variety of MSM and alternative media.

Democracy Now!

Progressive news hosted by Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez. Democracy Now! provides in-depth coverage of important news underreported in the MSM. The show, which airs on Pacifica Radio and LINK TV, features interviews with news makers and commentators excluded by the mainstream. Democracy Now! is an essential resource for anyone who wants to keep informed on the vital issues of the day. (Daily transcripts available on the website.)

Infoshop News

An essential source for anarchist (traditional anarchist / left-libertarian) news and opinion. Readers can submit news stories and opinion pieces.

Information Clearing House

Information Clearing House is a reader-supported one-man operation that does a fine job providing news stories and opinion pieces that "you won't find on CNN or FOX News".

Rational Review News Digest

A continual round-up of news and opinion edited by a right-libertarian.

The Raw Story

Liberal/progressive round-up of news and opinion, along with original stories/commentary.

Strike The Root: A Journal of Liberty

Edited by a shifting board of (mostly) right-libertarians, Strike The Root gives a daily link digest to news stories and opinion columns.

Now, a listing of other useful sites:

A-Infos

Traditional anarchist / left-libertarian news service (mailing-list). The only anarchist news list with more members than my own Smygo.

The American Conservative

Libertarian-leaning paleo-conservative magazine. that provides a welcome relief from the neocons. Unfortunately, only a selection of articles is available to non-subscribers.

Anarchist News

Traditional anarchist / left-libertarian news website. Users can publish news  stories and opinion pieces.

Anarkismo

Traditional anarchist / left-libertarian news website. Users can publish news  stories and opinion pieces.

The High Weirdness Project: Bulldada Newsblog

Reverend (Church of the SubGenius) Modemac's daily round-up of slackful news.

icanews.coop

The global co-operative news center.

Informed Comment

The blog of Middle-East scholar Juan Cole.

Interactivist Info Exchange

Far-left news and opinion.

Inter Press Service

Progressive, in-depth news articles from around the world.

In These Times

Progressive magazine.

Mother Jones

Progressive magazine.

The Narco News Bulletin

Covers Latin American political news, not just drug-oriented stories.

The Nation

Liberal/progressive magazine.

Reason

Right-libertarian magazine.

Reuters AlertNet

Humanitarian news.

Libertarian/progressive news.

Towards a Counter Movement!

Progressive news and opinion round-up.

Now, sites that refute misinformation and disinformation:

These websites provide a place to check the accuracy
of dubious claims. I would welcome suggested additions to
the list.

Of course, one should read these websites with appropriate
skepticism, as well.

How to Identify Misinformation
Some comic relief from the Bush administration, including its own good
wallop of misinformation. By coincidence, all of the websites "known for
spreading false stories" listed are highly critical of the Bush
administration.
(The Obama administration has delected this, but Wayback still has it.)
