Answering Matt Damon's Question on Sarah Palin (PART 2/2)

Matt Damon issued a confused plea for help last week. I answer him with a look at Sarah Palin, the Star of the McCain Neocon Ticket.

In my humble opinion, McCain now has what they call in war and politics the ‘initiative’ and now McCain-Palin is the frontrunner solely due to this VP pick.  Many people seem to be mystified or even frightened by the astute (my opinion, politically-speaking) move by the GOP to select Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin as McCain’s VP.  One of these people is actor Matt Damon, who in a panicked conversation here wonders just exactly who this modern-day Dan Quayle really is, and what she will do in power, especially if John McCain happens to die.  I’ll try to answer later, but let’s dwell on her selection for a moment.

Sarah Palin was picked to energize the Republican base and literally inject some life into the McCain campaign.  She is relatively unknown so the Democrats are forced to think for themselves how to counter, and historically the Democrats are not exactly brilliant free-thinkers and tacticians.  It now appears they were expecting that John McCain's pick was supposed to be George W. Bush, or at least someone with that last name.  At any rate, Palin will serve to fill out the less-than-8-weeks remaining with plenty of controversial water cooler talk about possible past scandals, Troopergate, banning library books, will her famous five kids affect her duties, what type of assault rifle she likes and is best to kill moose, etc.  She is a lively woman that many white males (I not included) will find pretty.  Many Republicans will put aside their issues and baggage with McCain, close their eyes to the lack of their lost principles and morality, due to this pretty lady with the pantyhose.  Strange world.

The imagery of war veteran and elder Senator with a poised, aggressive lady Governor should easily triumphed over a drab pair of Senators, one is an eloquent, impassioned public speaker but happens to be black.  McCain-Palin has even countered Obama-bin-Biden’s main theme of ‘Change’ with their own term, ‘Reform.’  C’mon, even though it will basically be an extension of the Bush-Cheney reign of terror, the one chink in the armor that Obama-Biden are failing to capitalize on (namely the fact that Obama-Biden are not technically from the Party of Bush), this should be an easy victory for the GOP.  Obamaman’s "lipstick-a-pig" counteroffensive is a laughable flop.

Although he no doubt in his heart wanted to pick his lunch buddy Democrat Senator Joe Lieberman, whomever McCain was going to pick would simply have to obeisance and promise to back up all of his neocon views.  In the midst of a financial crisis, McCain is self-professed economics retard who is vain enough to be pretty dead-set against picking some economic specialist who would be smarter than himself, such as former Governor and candidate Mitt Romney.  McCain was forced to pick someone to unite the GOP behind him, so his VP had to be an attention-getter but his vanity would never permit him to choose someone with superior experience.  Lastly, look at McCain’s past selection of ‘pretty’ women.  He likes Debbie-Reynolds-style models and Palin, Cindy McCain, and Carol McCain (wives 1+2) would be clones if you could toss them in a time warp back to age 25.  However, it almost seems to me that Palin is the head of the GOP ticket, and is in a way McCain’s penance for his past sins.

Well, that’s the image part of it, and in today’s politics substance doesn’t matter much. Damon wants a little substance.  Watch and listen to this short clip from her September 12 interview with ABC’s Charles Gibson.  Read the transcript below.

CG: Do you agree with the Bush Doctrine?

SP:  In what respect, Charlie?

CG: Well, what do you interpret it to be?

SP: His world view?

CG: No, the Bush Doctrine… in September 2002 before the Iraq War?

SP: I believe that what President Bush has attempted to do is rid this world of Islamic extremism, terrorists who are hell-bent on destroying our nation.  There have been blunders along the way though.  There have been mistakes made.  And with new leadership, and that is the beauty of American elections of course, and democracy, with new leadership comes the opportunity to do things better.

CG: The Bush Doctrine as I understand it, is that we have the right of anticipatory self-defense, that we have the right to a preemptive strike against any other country that we think is going to attack us.  Do you agree with that?

SP: Charlie, if there is legitimate and enough intelligence that tells us that a strike is imminent against American people, we have every right to defend our country.

CG: Do we have the right to be making cross-border attacks into Pakistan from Afghanistan with or without the approval of the Pakistani government?

SP: As for our right to invade, we are going to work with these countries building new relationships, working with existing allies but forging new, also, in order to, Charlie, get to a point in this world where war is not going to be a first option.  In fact, war has got to be – and military strike – a last option.

CG: Governor, I am asking, do we have the right in your mind, to go across the border, with or without the approval of the Pakistani government?

SP:  In order to stop Islamic extremists, those terrorists who would seek to destroy America and our allies, we must do whatever it takes and we Must Not Blink Charlie, in making those tough decisions in where we go and even who we target.

CG: And let me finish with this.  I got lost in a blizzard of words there.  Is that a yes that you think we have the right to go across the border, with or without the permission of the Pakistani government, to go after terrorists that are in the Waziristan area?

SP:  I believe America needs to exercise all options in order to stop the terrorists who are hell-bent on destroying America and our allies.  We have got to have all options out there on the table.

You can watch the entire ABC video below.  Basically, Charles Gibson spent 8+ hours over two days interviewing her and trying to pin her down on several issues, and Palin squirmed and avoided answering each time.  So, Matt Damon, Sarah Palin is just a normal politician.

Full 20/20 Charles Gibson video (Part 1  Part 2  Part 3  Part 4)

Now take a look at this satire that I actually found first when I was searching for Palin’s 20/20.  Be prepared to laugh.  Uncontrollably.  (Mock Reenactment of McCain’s VP Selection and Mock Sara Palin-Charles Gibson Interview)

Now some people have bandied about "Well, she’s a constitutionalist."  Here’s your answer – SARAH PALIN IS NOT A CONSTITUTIONALIST.  If she was, she would have said per her vice presidential oath to the Constitution of the United States she could not in any way sanction an attack against the sovereign government of Pakistan without a formal declaration of War from Congress, not just lash out with "the option" if a terrorist shouts "Boo!"  There is no evidence that Al-Qaeda has developed a Cave-Launched Intercontinental Nuclear Ballistic Missile (a CLICNBM) – yet.  Interestingly enough, we have already started a war against Pakistan, as I wrote about here, but it appears no one has noticed yet.  There is some limited evidence that Pakistan is a nuclear power with real nuclear strike capability, including CLICNBMs.  Mark my words – you will hear about our adventures in Pakistan when the American body counts ticks up either over there or with a blowback terrorist event here in the States.  National security my *** - our leaders are idiots bent on oil and gas pipelines, and really do not care about keeping you safe.

Palin really did not seem to have a grasp of what the Bush Doctrine actually is, and my impression from the entire interview was she is fairly ignorant and uninformed.  I bet she has no idea what blowback is.  FYI, a Canadian newspaper, the Calgary Herald, published a decent discussion on the Bush Doctrine that is worth a look.  Chalmers Johnson published Blowback in 2000, just before 9/11.  I highly recommend it.

My conclusion from the above transcript is that Sarah Palin is "hell-bent" in favor of the Global War on Terror, which, as McCain’s stoogie, she must be.  All of the dodgy talk about other "options" was for naught, it is clear that she favors immediate use of force and that dissent must and will not be tolerated.  Hence we heard her peculiar enunciation of "We Must Not Blink."  Wonder if she had to be brainwashed or if she did it to herself?  Most Americans are not this quite far gone, although Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan seem to be forgotten since the Cold War magically restarted in Georgia.

Here is a more relaxed clip of Palin from the Glenn Beck Show of June 2, 2008, where she amicably talked about drilling in Alaska and killing polar bears.  [For the record, I liked the clip and am in favor of drilling.  However, to be against is in one sense saying I prefer the deaths of American soldiers instead of dead polar bearburgers. (FYI, they taste gamey and are quite chewy.)]  What is notable she directly stated that "on that day" she would turn down a VP offer.  I will not stand in your way if you call her a liar.

So, Matt Damon, here is your summary.  Sarah Palin is an imperialist, and in that respect no different from Senators McCain and Obama-bin-Biden.  She also has plenty of questionable tendencies such as the "Bridge to Nowhere."  Matt, just expect the same craziness no matter who wins.  The Dems will go nuts since they think McCain-Palin is the apocalypse and vice-versa from the Reps’ Obamaphobes.  It is all the same really, their platforms are so similar it really does not make much difference.  Ron Paul talked about this in his "Third Party" press conference in case you missed it, check this link.

No more neocons, please, however your article is weak - it's not the pantyhose or whether she is pretty or not - the issue in today's real world is "IT'S LIFE"!!!! She wants babies to live - just like your Mom allowed you to live!!!!! In that respect SHE IS NOT A NORMAL POLITICIAN!!!! Besides, there is no more money to worry about!

Dear Joan -

Abortion is an issue for the states as its not covered in the constitution.  I am aware its a major issue for Americans as well as gay marriage, but our soldiers are dying too.  There is no debate that they have a right to live.

Little confused about your comment that there is no money to worry about.

Thanks for writing back!  Jake

Palin is PERSONALLY pro-life.  As governor she refused to sign legislation limiting abortion rights.  She belives it should be left to individual states. [link edited for length]
