As Sarah Palin's speech developed Thursday, everyone knew it would be big. But how big? And would it be big in the right ways? Would it appeal to voters outside the core Republican base, or would it electrify the base while alienating the fringe? Would it polarise the race or widen the appeal of the Republican ticket.
First, the polls are averaged over three days, so according to Rasmussen, approximately 2/3rds of the interviews were conducted before her firecracker speech, and almost all of them were before McCain's acceptance speech. Thus any effect of her speech will be heavily diluted.
So the numbers:
In the overall number the race is back to a statistical tie, with McCain closing the spead and nipping at Obama's heels.
More interestingly, Palin, dispite the recent flood of controvery and her willful pugnacity in the speech, now has a higher favorability rating than EITHER of the presidential candidates.
Apparently she impressed someone Wednesday.

Not a high hurdle to clear. I'm not that impressed with Ms. Palin, but I'd rate her higher than McLame or Obamarama. What the hell, I'd rate my cat, Scooter, higher than either of those two!
And not much higher, either; according to the article, Obama has 57% favorable, McCain 57%, and Palin 58%. That 1-point difference is (as the author himself observes in a different context) "statistically insignificant."

t is interesting how Obama has been evolving toward McCain’s positions rather than vice versa. Take Iran. At first, to Obama it posed little threat; now it is a lisinopril danger large indeed — as McCain insisted all along. Obama used to ridicule the surge and claim it had failed; now he assures us that it has worked beyond our wildest dreams. Obama was opposed to oil drilling, and was silent about coal and nuclear power. Now tarceva suddenly he has dropped mention of inflating our tires, and is referring to oil, gas, coal, and temazepam nuclear production as legitimate means to wean ourselves off foreign oil.
