The Revolution is Here to Stay

I knew that, of course. But the permanence of the Ron Paul movement was borne home today by an article in the Sumter (SC) Item.

I have always believed that the movement which Ron Paul ignited with his campaign for the Republican nomination for President was neither a personal following nor a nine month wonder.  But today I opened my Sunday edition of The Item and on page 5A there was the story:  "Ron Paul followers gather for own convention".  The appearance of the story in the main section of The item, a daily servicing a  South Carolina city with a population of forty thousand and a three county, largely rural, metropolitan area excited me.

This was not because the story was the expression of a change of heart on the part of the neoconservative ownership of the newspaper,  It was not an opinion piece and certainly not an endorsement, but simply the A.P. story which ran yesterday and today in newspapers throughout the country  ([link edited for length]).  The area is represented in Congress by Jim Clyburn and Jack Spratt, the two Democratic members of the South Carolina congressional delegation, and the Republican Party in the area consists largely religious conservatives.  The expression of Paul support before the Republican primary consisted largely of yard signs on the property of a closed factory on Liberty street, he was not mentioned by the local newspaper in  stories about the primary and his vote was negligible.  There is still a lot of very basic work to do in the area.

But the attention which the rally in Minneapolis  is attracking and the publication of the information across the country means that Ron Paul's name and his ideas will no longer be regarded with blank stares from people.  They will know the name, and not just as a quixotic candidate in one primary system but as the representative of an important national movement.

The fact that the meeting will be used to train campaign leaders so that it is a kickoff event rather than a farewell is important.

The Republican national convention will be suspended tomorrow so that Senator McCain can indulge in some ineffectual posturing over Hurricane Gustav, but the Campaign for Liberty will be going on with effective organization, an important message and a chance to move the revolution forward.([link edited for length]).

"Just the beginning". I am hopeful that this is true. Ron Paul definitely captured my political heart.

Ron might be onto something.   It's only during elections than anybody campaigns.   So, if the Libertarian Party begins campaigning now for the next election, we will have 4 years to get people convinced that liberty is the way to go.
