"I am My Brother's Keeper"

According to Barack, this is the American promise. Sorry Mr. Obama, that is not a promise we need to keep, and it is NOT in the Constitution.

Sometimes I just cannot believe what I have heard. Thankfully, I have Tivo.

I expected the normal political rhetoric as I listened to Barack Obama accept his nomination for President. I listened as hs told me how terrible America is economically and how things have been downhill the last eight years(economic data to the contrary).

But when I heard Obama say "The fundamental belief that I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper, that's the promise we need to keep. That's the change we need right now", I nearly fainted.

Mr. Obama, despite what you have heard, or read, or learned, there is absolutely no reference in the US Constitution that says I am my brother's keeper. You have somehow confused a question from Genesis with what the sworn duties of President of the United States would entail.

May I suggest that we keep the promise of the Constitution first and foremost?

I will only be My Brother's Keeper" when I get to tell my brother how to live his life from A to Z, if I am expected to foot the bill.

Until then, my brother better get up and start taking care of himself.

If Mr. Obama wants to use the Federal government to force me to be "My Brother's Keeper", he needs to get a Constitutional Amendment passed stating so.

Otherwise, I see this as just one major step forward towards socialism and entitlements.  That is a step we cannot afford to take.

What do you mean a " ... one major step forward towards socialism and entitlements"  We unfortunately are already there.... the problem is rolling back the socialist policies we already have and stop any more socialist policies from developing.

yes...this comment caught my attention, at first I thought it was an attempt to throw in biblical christian reference.  I dont know if I fully agree with you moosa, but I cant help recall on Obamas emphasis on self reliance. initially feeling that the two concepts contrast each other....later i realize that the cryptic seeming comment was more innocent and was meant to point out an individuals need to contribute to society and thier community, interdependent thinking verses isolationism....

mueneeez,

Yes the self reliance was mentioned.  But I felt it also rather apparent that if you come up short, then Big Brother would be there to pick up the pieces.

We can be "our brother's keeper" and help without it being the mandate of the government to do so.

 Thanks for the feedback,

EJ

WOw, I cant believe how people can be so blind. There is things you just can't base of a document. You can't base your life on a document that was written 200 years ago and that was meant to be flexible to change. YOU DON'T WANT TO BE YOUR BROTHER KEEPER? fine, be an asshole. But he is the president and he can't let this country rotten with asshole's greed. Neither will I. This is my country, this is my people. I can't eat cake when I hear my neighbors kids are crying when they are hungry. This is not about being statist, this is about having compation and caring for each other. We live in a society. We ought to have liberties, we also need to look out for eachother, because one day we might be the ones in trouble.

Oscar,

We can look out for each other without the barrel of a gun forcing us to do so.

But the bottom line is that you are responsible for you.  You are not responsible for me.  That is hard to accept I am sure.

The Constitution is flexible to change, and there are ways to do so.  So do it the proper way.  Propose an amendment and get the states to approve it.
