Since well before Ron Paul officially ceased his official campaign drive for the Republican nomination, his grassroots campaign has mostly disappeared from the newspaper headlines. It would be a mistake, however, to assume that nothing has happened.
Dr. Paul announced a few months ago the creation of his new Campaign For Liberty, which is designed to be an ongoing campaign that goes well beyond the 2008 elections. Quietly and without much fanfare, his supporters have been finding their way to that campaign's website. Today, as I write this article, the site boasts that over 87,000 people have signed onto his campaign as supporters. Considering that the campaign's goal was 100,000 supporters signing on by September 2nd, this is a remarkable achievement. And don't rule out the possibility that they could find the remaining 13,000 between now and then and thereby reach their stated goal.
Clearly, the Ron Paul movement is alive and well. It has merely transformed from a 2008 presidential campaign into a long-term force for change.
The campaign kicks off with its own convention in Minneapolis, across town from where the Republican Party will be gathering to anoint John McCain as the latest standard bearer of conservatism. This is a claim that Dr. Paul would contest, claiming that McCain is no conservative. While I personally believe that what Dr. Paul believes is conservatism is not in alignment with what most of the country thinks is conservatism, I certainly agree with him in his rejection of McCain.
As usual, the MSM are ignoring this gathering for the most part, and they will undoubtedly continue to ignore it right through the Republican coronation...errrm, um, ahem....I mean nomination. But as usual, that is not stopping the Paul stalwarts. They're planning to descend on Minneapolis anyway, so the home state of Jesse Ventura better get ready.
After all, former Gov. Venture himself is ready. He's scheduled to be one of the speakers when the Rally For The Republic convenes on Tuesday, September 2nd, and he'll be joined on stage by a ranging list of speakers including Lew Rockwell, Howard Phillips of the U.S. Taxpayers Alliance, former Gov. Gary Johnson of New Mexico, Tucker Carlson of MSNBC fame, Barry Goldwater Jr., and many others. Jimmie Vaughn will conclude the evening's festivities with a concert.
While many of us are financially handicapped to the point of being unable to join the gathering in Minneapolis, and while it's doubtful that most of the 83,000 on board with the Campaign For Liberty so far will be headed there next week, it's nice to know that Dr. Paul didn't just let the impetus from his campaign die. Regardless of how the MSM treat next week's affair, the fight for liberty goes on, and now it has a name and the beginnings of a direction. Further, it will be interesting to learn just how many people spend the time and money to make the trek. I'll be watching, and I'm sure others will be watching too.
