2008 election offers choices

Ralph Nader and Bob Barr offers a true alternative to the poor choices the Democrats and Republicans have given to us in McCain and Obama
by Jonathan Cymberknopf

The American sentiment on the streets is that we have been given a poor choice this 2008 election forcing us to choose between McCain and Obama. While it is true this is probably the worst choice of candidates put up for sacrifice by the Democrats and Republicans, the good news is there are two more candidates that offer a true alternative to the status quo. Ralph Nader, who in my opinion is one of the greatest Americans in the 20th Century, has mounted an Independent run for the Presidency. Here is a candidate that has a true record of accomplishments. Obama may talk about change but Nader walks the talk . Ralph Nader is the true agent of change. For example, Nader is for adopting a single payer national health insurance and repealing the Taft-Hartley anti-union law. Both of these issues would never be touched with a ten foot pole by Obama and yet Obama calls himself an agent of change. I think we know who the real progressive candidate is here.

On the other side of the spectrum, we find Bob Barr who is a mainstream Libertarian or a true conservative depends on who you talk to. Either way, Barr is a far better choice than McCain. McCain has been part of the problem all along. McCain has produced devastating legislations such as McCain-Feingold. Barr understands that the true culprit of our economic demise has been the out of control spending. A Barr Administration would cut every single area of Federal Spending as well as end the war in Iraq which is bleeding us dry.

Barr has placed a special emphasis on the civil liberties and privacy rights that have been taken away from us. For example, Barr is the only candidate that would eliminate FISA; even Obama who is all about change supports FISA, what a contradictory statement. Barr would uphold the Fourth Amendment and in a sense is continuing the Ron Paul revolution which is to serve the Constitution and not ignore it or open it up to interpretation. Less Government and more Freedom is what Barr is all about and represents a true alternative to McCain.

McCain knows this and has started to petition to remove Barr from the Pennsylvania Ballot. I guess that's why they call McCain a "maverick". This is the first time in American History that Republicans have blatantly used dirty tricks in a Presidential election to remove their competition.  The Democrats have done this countless of times in American History, most recently in 2004, when they removed Nader from several key ballots.

What Americans have to ask themselves is why the Two Party system is so intent in shutting up Barr and Nader.  Americans have to start thinking for themselves and not let the mainstream media which is controlled by this Duopoly, scare you, sucker you, and brainwash you into wasting your vote for Obama or McCain. Thank goodness this 2008 election, we do have a choice and we can feel good about our vote. Remember the election is not a popularity contest; it is a self test on our belief system.

Don't forget Chuck Baldwin.

As of today, Barr is on the ballot in 38 states, Baldwin in 28, and Nader in 24. While the totals for all three will increase, none of them will be on all 50; and the supporters of one, in states where he's not on, should seriously consider the other two if they are.

I would prefer to forget Chuck Baldwin. He represents a fringe element of society under the guise of a viable third party candidate. Not a chance... Unfortunately, Obama or McCain are the best candidates for mainstream America, as the third parties blew a great chance at appealing to the average voter. None of the third parties have made a real effort to go after the mainstream, and the only party that actually is making slight inroads, the Modern Whig Party, isn't fielding a candidate.

Jonathan, where did you get this fact?

"A Barr Administration would cut every single area of Federal Spending"

If this is true then please give you sources so that I can start supporting him.

www.ballot-access.org  has an up to dae chart of the ballots each candidate is OFFICIALLY on.   In Nader's case it is 25 as of Aug 21.  He might have finished additional ones but have not been ratified yet by the state. Good news 2 more states have been added for Bob Barr making it 40

The republicans used similar tactics in 2000 and in 2004 to keep libertarians off of the ballot.

FormerLPmember, sorry to hear the "former" part of your tag but what can we do.  In an interview he gave earlier with I think Glenn Beck (I could be thinking of another interview though) he stated that as soon as he took office he would order an immediate freeze on ALL executive spending.  From that point he would start eliminating programs that support wasteful spending.  He also plans to un-governmentalize programs like social security by privatizing, welfare by allowing charities and churches to pick up the slack and education by allowing parents to choose what education is best for their kids.  He really has been solid on his platform which leads to a very small government, and that makes this Libertarian happy.  Check out youtube.com which has all of his interviews on his youtube page.  Hope to get you back to the good side.

Bob Barr is clearly the best bet for those of us who are serious about sending a clear, unmistakable message to the two "major" parties. Barr is unquestionably far preferable to either Barack Obama or John "King of the RINOs" McCain. Whether you are a Libertarian Party member or a "libertarian leaning" constitutional conservative (such as myself), Barr is the ONLY acceptable option. NONE of the other "third party" candidates are really viable options. It's time for the "purist" hold-outs in the LP and the die-hard grumbling Paulistas to grow up, get realistic, and decide whether or not they're serious about the LP truly becoming a force to be reckoned with in American politics. The LP and all true believers in the principles of limited government have a golden opportunity this time around. Let's not blow it with infighting.

How can anyone say third parties blew it. They get NO media coverage whatsover! The dems and Reps won't even let them on stage to debate!! And by the way, I think that Zogby poll is full of shit. Did you see their latest numbers? Actually their last few polls have been ridiculous. Nader at 1%? When CNN and other polls have him at 6%? Barr, too, has seen a noticeable smaller result on Zogby polls. Hey, Jonathan: DO a story on THAT.

yes the mainstream doesn't cover the LP (or any other 3rd party) in the news unless it is as an interesting tidbit.

Better to concentrate forces in one area to help with successes.  Consider NH and the Free State Project.  Even if you don't join you should sign up as a friend of the FSP and get the newsletter to hear about continuing successes.

Life for Liberty, I could not find this statement on his web page. Are you saying that the Executive Branch lead by Barr as president would freeze its budget from future increases thereby maintaining its current (2007) expense level? Or that Barr as president would have no expenses in the Executive Branch?

Life for Liberty, there are limited constitutional capabilities granted to the President. How does he purpose to eliminate programs?

I did read his position paper on social security, and while his position may be described as a libertarian position he did not describe all options to reform social security. Specifically he did not mention the “purely libertarian solution” proposed by Harry Browne a two time LP Presidential candidate:

“Social Security is inherently unsound because it's a political program – run by politicians for political purposes. It will never work. And no attempts to fix it, reform it, or refinance it can make a silk purse out of a politician's ear.

Only a purely libertarian solution can make things right: Shut Social Security down – completely, immediately and for good. End the Social Security tax tomorrow morning and stop making Social Security payments tomorrow evening. Anyone under 50 can have a better retirement putting 10 percent of his income in the bank instead of 15 percent into Social Security.

And what happens to those who are currently dependent on Social Security and those too close to retirement to build a new nest egg?

Have the government make a one-time purchase of private annuities – secure, non-political annuities that guarantee the same income Social Security is paying now to senior citizens.

How will the annuities be paid for?

Sell off assets the federal government shouldn't own anyway – power companies, pipelines, unused military bases, Western lands, oil rights, mineral rights, and the hundreds of thousands of federal buildings that serve no constitutional purpose." Harry Browne

...They believe to and cram all, but understand zilch. The gross incompetence, unabated consumerism and keeping up appearances indebt their children and enrich their enemies. Amerikakers don't own their useless stuff. It owns them, but is not loaded on a hearse anymore. They are above Marx’s and Lenin’s teaching that the rampant greed, consumerism and currency debasing ruin the country, be it Rome, Russia, Germany or the American Empire of debt. During the American Revolution, the troops lined their worthless bills called shinplasters in the knee-length boots. It was quite liberating not to keep up appearances.  Amerikakers vote for the like nobodies, bigots, cranks, hustlers and pulpit artists franchising race or faith talk into a fat living and a political career."
