Fair - The Other F-Word

Is something done in the name of fairness really fair to us all?

It can be counted on that sacrifice of one's own self (you know, the self that you own) is more often than not, the steep fee that the nebulous idea of what "fair" charges for it's usage as a concept. It is almost never worth the overinflated price tag paid by it's potential victims, to achieve some vague and non-existent notion of the "greater good".

Fair is just another, four letter f-word, constantly misused. A handy and at least to those who wield it, inexpensive tool that's primary use it to control others and achieve an outcome favorable to the person or group making the demand on another. This they do while attempting to lay claim to what is indeed fair. No debate of what is truly equitable to all is ever to be allowed. A duty to act is both implied and demanded.

We are sternly instructed from seemingly endless sources, to do what others presume is our fair share, assisting with achieving what someone else wants. Despite having a functioning brain, many tend to comply, in a knee-jerk fashion, lest the pesky devil of guilt take up pursuit against the very core of their being. Suddenly an obligation without a written mutual agreement to make it legitimate, just instantly materializes out of thin air and is cast into our laps.

One nasty little four letter f-word, breathes foul breath into the ghoul and many of our own minds are trained to respond Pavlovian Style, again with no decision having been determined as to it's merit. Our fellow human beings we share this planet with, too often comply and make not even a quiet mewling of protest against such an outrage. The plea that automatically reduces all our personal preferences, hopes and dreams as selfish for not taking a back seat to their own needy blustering.

All people when confronted with a poorly disguised decree to perform, should immediately ask, "Will I get something I desire in return for my efforts?" Compensation is the motivation of a free people, guilt is the heavy-handed prod in constant use against the enslaved.

What would truly be fair to everyone in all situations is to simply be left alone. No ambiguity there, no tricks or attempts to elicit remorse for not responding quickly enough to the person or group doing the asking to act in the name of fairness. Most certainly no appeals to anyone to hijack their own sense of self value just to hand it over to another entity. One whose primary reason for existing is to put their own self wants or that of who they claim to represent, forever above that of who they ask to perform for them.

To truly be respectful of the rights of our peers, we should ask not what another can do for someone else that would forsake them and their own personal needs for the benefit of the group. Instead please choose wisely enough to ask nothing at all of them if they are to otherwise give themselves over to those who seldom have their best interest at heart.

Dan Steward
