I suppose for our "Great Society" to at least give the superficial impression that it is great, we should have those candidates from the margin that preach antiquated and unworkable ideals included in national debate. Prohibiting alcohol, at first glance almost appears quaint until a person remembers all the perfidy and ruin it brought upon America in the 1920's with equally insidious lasting effects that vex us all in the 21st century with our current war on drugs. Elliott Ness wouldn't have had such an easy time back then if he had to balance his time rounding up bootleggers with that of pinching veritable legions of crackheads.
The notion of modern day prohibition brings to my mind images of picketers standing outside liquor stores yelling at the patrons that they are choosing a slow boat ride to hell and describing to them, a frightening scenario of nasty gremlins wearing spiked shoes, jumping up and down on their livers.
I read with a curious interest a very interesting article by Darryl W. Perry about it's candidate for President in 2008, Gene Amondson. I wonder if he also opposes smoking as well as the article did not detail such information. The good folks at breakfast table diner "debates" often talk about a "candidate you'd like to have a beer with". I suppose this just ain't the guy.
To the author, thanks for your article, I found it quite insightful. Until this morning, I never gave thought to the prohibitionists actually having a party in modern times. I figured they would have had the good sense to close up shop and learn some very important historical lessons about the consequences of prohibiting anything that people want. A constitutional amendment ending prohibition should have sufficed to clue them in over 70 years ago. I guess it didn't as there will always be those among us that will never hesitate to use the power of the state to prevent us from doing what we want with our lives. Sadly enough, we will never be in serious lack of busybodies out there that base their entire existence on telling us how to live.
When Mr. Perry gets to the interview with the Green Party candidate and they tell him that the bacon on your plate is evil, let them know that Dan Steward said that if God didn't want us to eat animals, he wouldn't have made them taste so good.
I look forward to knowing what other candidates from other minor parties have to say. Don't worry, fellow Libertarians, I don't intend to vote for any of these "one trick ponies". I just like to observe their goings on in the sense that a person stands momentarily fixated on a train wreck then they get on with their lives.
