What Does Ron Paul Really Want?

We've heard the current crop of presidential candidates, Democrat and Republican alike, tell us what they want to do for us. But Dr. Ron Paul wants something substantially different from all the rest. Here, in his own words, is what Ron Paul wants.

While it is usually easy to tune in and listen to the words a man says, it is often considerably harder to accurately determine his underlying motives -- especially when it comes to that strangest of animals, politicianus demopublicanus. We have become very gun-shy and disinclined to believe a word they say -- and with good cause! In instance after instance, this brute beast wins an election by mouthing pious platitudes and, once safely ensconced in office, proceeds to violate the trust of those who put him there.

"Read my lips - no new taxes!"
"I never had sex with that woman!"

Hence the well-deserved epithets and jokes we have become all too familiar with.

Q: "How can you tell a politician is lying?" - ba-da-bing!
A: "His lips are moving." - ba-da-boom!

Presidential Election 2008 is no different - if anything, even more caution is required of us as voters. The statements of this season's crop of presidential candidates require extremely careful evaluation.

Try this experiment: go to any presidential candidate website, and sift through the dust and debris of their platform. What are they really saying? By now you've probably heard it all -- over, and over, and over again! And, nine times out of ten it's the same old tired shtick! It goes something like this:

Government this! Government that!
9-11! Fear! Terror! War!
You've got to give up just a little more!

Give me more power and I'll protect you!
We know what's best for you!
Motherhood, apple pie, family values!
I'm more religious than the next guy!
Elect ME and I'll do this and that for you!

But Oh, Thank God for that tenth time!

I was impacted by a powerful contrast recently when I heard Dr. Ron Paul tell a TV interviewer why he wants to become President of the United States.

Sensitized as you have been by the American political process, "Why," you might ask, "should anyone be inclined to believe one sleazy politician true statesman in preference to the other lying bastards fine candidates?"

In this instance perhaps one good reason might be Ron Paul's "golden" track record. Ten Republican terms in congress, but instead of being sold out to the party machine, loyal to the constitution and to the people.

Another reason might be his transparent willingness to openly answer questions about issues when other candidates don't even admit the issues exist.

But perhaps the most compelling reason is the self-authenticating nature of what Dr. Paul had to say as to why he wants to be our president. In truth, it was his statements about what he does not want to do as president that really capture my imagination!

He prefaced his reason with three negatives, three non-reasons. He explicitly denied three of the main reasons virtually all other presidential candidates telegraph so openly in their platforms.

Here is what Dr. Paul said:

"I want to be president,
not because I want to run your lives.
I don't want to be president

to run the economy, and
I don't want to be president to run the world.
I want to be president
To Restore LIBERTY!"
- Ron Paul, 2007

Merely comparing and contrasting Dr. Paul's stated motive with all the other candidates makes him shine like a true gem in the midst of a parched and dirty field. I want this man at the helm of my country!

I recently wrote a "take-off" on the traditional Christmas carol, "The Twelve Days of Christmas" in honor of Dr. Paul. Each link connects to an element of his presidential platform. There is a lot of repetition in the song (which is part of the fun of singing it) so I will only reproduce the final verse here, the one that contains all the elements:

On his twelfth day in office,
Ron Paul gave to me
A restored constitution,
Second amendment,
All of my earnings,
Non-intervention,
Choice in my healthcare,
Border protection,
Property rights,
Restored pri-va-cy!
US sovereignty,
Sound money,
Real integrity,
And renewed faith in Liberty!

As Dr. Paul is fond of saying, "Freedom is popular!" I hope you'll help Ron Paul get what he really wants so he can in turn give us Americans what we really want - FREEDOM!

Good stuff. I can't decide which one is best: the current one, or "'Twas the Night Before Ron Paul."

You forgot the parts about wanting to be president to force women to carry unwanted children to term, to put religious propaganda in the courthouses and government offices and to indoctrinate kids into christianity in government schools.  Those are his priorities too.

Come on Dave,

Your specious and blatantly inaccurate comment almost does not deserve a response. When you make statements like this in a public forum, it can only damage your credibility, and I would hope for better from a Nolan Chart author!

But then, maybe you've confused Dr. Paul with Mike Huckabee?

Ron Paul's priority is a return to Liberty and his very, very clear platform is "hands off" with respect to every one of your slanderous accusations. His agenda is the constitution. I suggest you read it!

He wants federal government OUT of abortion. No laws on the books. NONE. It's a state issue. If he wanted abortion to be illegal that badly, he'd just push through a ban. And if your state bans it, you're never too far away from another state. Just because he doesn't want to ban the ten commandments in a courtroom, doesn't mean he is forcing courtrooms to do so. And just because he wants to allow children to pray silently in school doesn't mean he's forcing prayer. You are a walking fallacy, Dave. Learn the issues and don't exaggerate, or you'll end up a shallow, hollow, shell of a man with no reasoning capabilities. Also known as a sheep to the state. You're on your way. Bon voyage.

Ron Paul said "wiggle" not "weasel". NBC botched the transcript,  and it remains to be seen why.
