There is a huge monster which has been attacking the U.S. for many decades, this is governmental growth and complacency. So bloated is the system that it's the main reason we are in a financial crises.
As a Republican who has finally thrown in the towel, I have come to the firm conclusion that governmental growth and spending on all levels, has placed us in the situation that we are in. It is also the reason that we cannot get beyond our archaic two party system, with any success.
I ask the question, "why can't a third party platform, which makes more sense than any of the other platforms, not succeed?" I'm scared to report that the answer is that such a large percentage of our U.S. population is now dependant partly, or in whole, on governmental support, and that it may be too late.
If you work for, or are supported by (even in part) the City, County, State or Federal governments, chances are you help bloat the system. And why would you want to change the system if it benefits you? This is the great dichotomy that separates the governmental dependants from the rest of the population. I wonder when we will reach the point of no return with governmental bloatedness. When it comes to voting, this group of people will pick a party who will perpetuate their interests, thus continuing the cradle to grave mentality. That's the problem with administrations, they go away, but the bureaucracies they create continue to grow and eat up the available resources, year after year. In fact, it goes beyond that. Government bureacracies will often make extravagant purchases at the end of the fiscal year, to assure that their next year's budget will at least be as much as the current year.
So bloated is the governmental system, that the non-governmental voting population, may become the minority. When we reach this turning point, it will be more like communism, than a democracy. It will be very difficult to ever restore civil liberties and true freedom, after the people have systematically chosen supposed governmental safety and protection, in lieu of their civil rights.
I hope that Americans wake up to this reality and start voting to downsize and limit the scope of the local, state and federal bureaucracies.

You pretty much nailed it. I wish I had a solution. Atlas shrugged maybe? Just let the whole thing fall apart and then try to rebuild it? Sometimes I think that might work but the last time that happened, in the great depression, the people elected a socialist ... 4 times!
