Freedom of the Press -- Part II

State Secrets? Do they have absolute priority over all else.

Yesterday I wrote:

Damn that pesky freedom of the press! Who ever heard of such a thing in a free country?

To which my correspondent replied:

If I had said lock Hersh up and throw away the key then maybe this quote would have some meaning. My problem w/Hersh besides the fact he's been pitching this bull**** for over the last 3 years is his anti military bent. He made a speech a couple of years ago saying our Army would go down as one of the most brutal occupying forces in history. Additionally, he insinuated he had seen video of US soldiers firing indiscriminately into an Iraqi crowd as his proof. What an **** liar! But hey, if you want to believe everything this guy pitches, regardless of his angle, then be my guest!

No, I don't believe everything he pitches, but I believe more now, after you pointed out that his reportage relies on actual leaks from your colleagues (the true topic of my post). I support a country in which we are likely to hear more than one side of the story. One who rails against the media probably has a side of the story he doesn't want heard.

Information has a life independent, thus a freedom, beyond the narrow interests of the stations through which it passes. But the handlers can be intimidated. Imprisoning Hersh would be a fairly ineffective way of stopping the message, but it would have a chilling effect on the process

btw, I am not sure that any rule or contract, military or otherwise, that restricts an individual from revealing facts, without questioning them, that are detrimental to the interests of the American people, are constitutional. No one can be obligated to conceal treason, for instance.
