Fight Back Against Government Intrusion

This is a letter to editor I wrote in response to smoking ban legislation in Iowa. It received positive comments so I am publishing it here.

What happened to the American society that I learned about in history class? I always thought that the United States was the bastion of freedom and liberty. I remember learning that the key to a free and prosperous society is dependent in part on private property rights and that the purpose of government was to protect those rights.

Nowadays the government is no longer in the business of defending individual property rights. The smoking ban is a classic example. The politicians and their followers refer to private business operations as if they own the property themselves. Today's politicians literally have no respect for the risk and sacrifice individuals make to operate businesses. Politicians continue to create numerous laws that restrict and regulate the fruit and labor of its citizens. This continuous government intrusion into private property rights is eroding the core principles of our fast declining free society.

The American Revolutionaries of the 18th century fought with their lives to protect and defend their property from an over intrusive government. Today, it seems, Americans are more inclined to sit back and allow the government to trample over their rights. Are there not any true patriots that are willing to stand up and fight back against big government intrusiveness? If we don't assume that responsibility, we can be sure that government will continue to expand and take control of our property and what remains of our free society.

Nice article.  I was just in Iowa, helping with the flood.  I left just before the ban took effect.  It really bugged me that I could be arrested or ticketed for smoking in the wrong place while in the state to help with the disaster.

you talk about people "fighting back" but most smokers have been brainwashed into believing they are the bad ones and most non-smokers just don't care.  So aside from writting and talking about it, and trying to vote right, what exactly are we supposed to do?  Take up arms?

I'm a songwriter and even wrote songs about it.  Guess what.  I've sold 5 whole copies of my CD Revolution.  (iTunes, CD Baby, Rhapsody)

Most people here it and are suprised someone in my business (PR) would release such a CD.  But even libertarians have avoided it.  The real problem seems to be that those who support liberty are either convinced they are bad or are too busy fighting amongst themselves to get together and throw the bums out of office.  I truly believe that smoking will face its own prohibition but unlike alcohol, I'm not sure there is enough people to fight back and repeal it once it is made illegal.

the thing is that smoking in certian areas can kill other people around you, people with breathing problems, and what not, theres more than just asthma out there, personally i'm soon going to have to go and have an alergie est done to conferm that i have an alergie to ciggerett smoke, nearly every time i smell it i pass out, just immagine this, being at a cross walk with a person across the road  you walk past each other in the middle of the lane and they pass out on the street, just because of the smell that you have attached to you. or better yet a person going in to a sever reaction and whole throght closing off and them then dieing because of a person simply smoking to close to them, the sad thing it, for some people this is as real as a possability as it is for others the die from sented products and eating peanuts. so really it doesn't have any thing to do with the smokers but the life of those who don't.

As it is now 2009 and in Pa it is now "illegal" to smoke in public.  Our rights are getting taken away at such a small rate everyday people either do not see it or just choose to ignore it.  Take up arms?  the above post asks this question.   It should happen, we as american people have the right to refuse our own government, it was stated in our constitution that we have the right to dismiss our "leaders" if they fail us.  Where are all the followers now?  If i was to take up arms and try to rally support can you imagine what would happen?   thats right nothing..... no one would follow even though thousands would agree, so all you would have would be one "patriot" charging in for change.  and under the nations "patriot act" he would be considered a terroists and jailed, and most likely would not even make a blip in the news.

If you think the government is concerned about your health or anyone else's, you have lost your mind.  They are  after the money with the tax increase on cigarettes.  All the hype about cigarettes is  a SCAM and you ingnorant people have fell for it. Our government will  drain each and every one of us til we can't make ends meet.  Thy don't care about us.  All they care about is lining their own pockets with all the money they can. We are under the most corrupt government in the world that has sold us out for the almighty dollar that very soon won't be worth a dime.  You people keep demanding that they take away our rights and become more involved.  Well, they are and believe me, your time is coming too.  It might not be cigarettes but it will be something you enjoy doing and you know what?  You deserve it for being so self righteous.

the question of us taking up arms is something we should do. our government has taken our rights away little by little for decades. and they call us extremist when we have something to say about it. they are not going to listen to anything we have to say besides most of americana have become drones and dont understand what it is they are loosing. others are afraid to stand up because of the threat of arrest by the local athorities or FBI. I am ready to take up arms now but it would be a suicide mission and wouldnt make a differance, however the time is coming and when enough ppl feel violated by the government and will take up arms. on that day I will be ready to strike with everyone else.

This is another part of their agenda.  Smoking will not be prohibited because they can make so much on it through taxation.  Not to mention Obama wants to reduce the nicotine levels in cigarettes.  He claims this will help people quit.  I say it will only make them smoke more and buy more cigarettes.  This will keep them hooked and bring in more funds by the above mentioned taxation.  A viscious cycle being created here.
