The "Leader" Now Supports Sen John McCain: Nackey S Loeb Rolling Over In Her Grave by Jim ODonnell

It is in times like these that I am glad that I am an old fart with an excellent memory. The "Manchester (NH) Union Leader" a once conservative newspaper has announced its endorsement of Sen John McCain for President.
As this is likely to influence the New Hampshire primary all should be aware of some the this once fine newspaper's history. Well I looked it up on Wikipedia but they only had a very limited history of the paper.
Since New Hampshire has always held the first primary, this paper has had greater influence than its about 70,000 readers would seem to warrant. It was instrumental in defeating Edmund Muskie in his bid for the Presidency in 1972 under one of its renound publishers William Loeb.
After his death his wife Elizabeth Scripps "Nackey" Loeb took over as publisher, and this is the person that I use to watch on CSPAN. Much more on her below. After her death in 2000 this is a description of what happened:
The newspaper's strident tone has lessened considerably since the Loebs died. In 2000, after Nackey's death on January 8, Joseph McQuaid took over publishership.
Well since Joe McQuaid took over the paper it has no longer had the influence that it once had, and I guess for obvious reasons. He has been in George W Bush's pocket in the support for the war in Iraq, so that the newspaper's endorsement of Sen John McCain is just a logical extension of that prior commitment.
But I bet that "Nackey" is turning over in her grave. Let me first give you my personal impression of her from the dozens of times that I saw her on CSPAN. She was a no-nonsense, feisty, old broad who would correct anyone in their mid-sentence if she disagreed with what they were saying. Yes there is another fine part of her name "Scripps" which is also a well know newspaper name.
What is not in Wikipedia but which I remember well is that it was the "Leader" who supported Ronald Reagan in 1980 and made sure that he won in New Hampshire and eventually in the rest of the country. This was under Nackey's leadership. I also remember Joe McQuaid who always impressed me as a "yes man."
She was a real conservative and did not like much that the government ever did and said so at every opportunity. If she were alive I know that she would be a Ron Paul supporter. I would bet a lot of money on this.

I totally agree with this article and I would go one step further. Joe McQuaid should go back to the school of journalism. An eight grader could right better articles.
