Author Writes About Ron Paul; Surprised At Response

Readership of many articles on an "off day" provides some evidence that residual traffic on the Chart may not be entirely Google-driven. We need more!

 May 1st

I was surprised and somewhat pleased today to discover that even though I had as yet to publish any new articles on Nolan Chart this month, I am not completely destitute of readers.Writings from Patmos - creator's Theological Musings

As of 9AM MDT today, according to the Nolan Chart Reports page, I already had a readership count of 84 readers. The lion's share of the readership goes to "Ron Paul, Wesley Snipes, and Other Tax Honesty Heroes," with 11 readers so far - not too surprising as this is a fairly recent and somewhat controversial article.

Next comes "Help Ron Paul Stop the SPP," weighing in with 6 readers. The numbers drop from there, with three articles drawing three readers each, seven articles read by two readers, and a whopping thirty-two articles read by a single reader.

Now, on a very good day with a leading article about Ron Paul listed by Google, I can get hits numbering in the thousands. That is gratifying, and the comments that appear below controversial articles are often thought provoking. However, on a "slow day" with nothing new published, I doubt that there is much bringing traffic to Nolan Chart other than the other faithful writers who "did their homework" for the day.

And so, I find it somewhat encouraging to discover that even on a day when I am "away" from writing - whether I may be struggling to make a living, out surfing, designing the latest world-changing invention, writing children's stories and theological fantasies, or simply napping - words I've written at other times continue to fall upon the eyes of others.Houses Must One Day Fly!

Responses among today's 84 article views are probably scattered across the usual amazingly diverse spectrum, ranging from utter apathy and boredom to delighted chuckles to explosive outrage.

And so, however you came across my writing, and whatever your reaction to it may have been, this author would like to say "thanks" to his readers for giving me some reassurance that I haven't completely wasted the countless hours I have spent writing over the last four months.

Thanks of course also go to Nolan Chart for providing a "bully pulpit," and a special "tip of the hat" to that one, lone reader who evidently found my writing intriguing enough to click on thirty-plus older articles for at least a casual look into the convoluted machinations of my thinking.

I love to hear from my readers, so please "keep those cards and letters coming!" :)

Maybe we should write real articles and less about Ron Paul. People of non-libertarian viewpoints will avoid this website because all that they see is non stop Ron Paul. I try to link up my articles to non RP's and non Libertarians, but this website looks like a conspiracy hive full of people who think that the US is getting worse to the point of implosion. No one speaks with an optimist point of view.

Hey Lloyd Kempson....

We are extremely optimistic.  Why not?  Slowly but surely we are doing the things that are necessary to create the type of US that we had before.  The type which insures social AND economic liberty for all of her people.  You won't see any "sky is falling" stuff from most of us.  We are busy doing positive stuff.  Have a great day.

Ok the US was never perfect this is another libertarian myth. We have to label ourselves as the true progressives. Or as I like to say Atheists for free trade. Unless you really want to go back to the days of slave trade, lack of medical accountability, and heroin being sold to treat headaches. Sensible Libertarianism is what we need to aim for, not a bunch of the South was right, the Jews need to leave Israel, and a bunch of other RP related crap. His time has come and gone. He tried, but he failed.

Lloyd,

You are the most pessimistic person on here. You look for a way to say something negative about every single article on here. It was old before it even began. Once again, you keep saying RP's done, but you just can't seem to stop talking about him. Seriously, get over it. If you want to go head and line up behind Comrade McCain, nobody is stopping you, and you will definitely find more "we"s in that line.

I suggest you ban the one calling themself "Lloyd Kempson" from your blog. He is always the first one to comment and then no one comments on what you've written. He is an anti-Ron Paul troll devoted to hating from the Eric Dondero school of no-thought with ulterior motives. Please flush him down the toilet.

Thank you.

"Author Writes About Ron Paul; Surprised At Response"

Hmmm ... I see that this recent gratuitous use of Ron Paul's name to get reads has generated 500 reads, placing the article on top of NC's "Libertarian" chart.

The surprises just never stop around here, do they? 8)

Yes George,

If you read the central paragraph of my article, you'll see what I'm getting at.

I came to Nolan Chart to write about Ron Paul. While I may have "branched out" over the months, Dr. Paul and his message of freedom has been at the core of what I've written about. And so, "Author Writes About Ron Paul" is at least not entirely gratuitous. And, yes, his name "sells" better than anything else here at the Chart.

If you have any suggestions for other or better "hooks" to bring reader traffic here, please do bring them up, especially as topics for discussion in the Lounge. We have discussed the matter in spurts and starts there, but some of the "solutions" to the problem (such as offering RSS feeds and doing outside advertising) have not as yet been implemented.

Even so, and this is really what this article is about, I was genuinely surprised to find almost 100 readers by 9AM on a "slow day" with nothing new available to my readership. Go figure. Was my use of Ron Paul in the title gratuitous? Probably. Will I write other articles without his name in the title? Probably. Will they be read? Maybe. Please offer your suggestions as to how to get them read!

Lloyd: We are suggesting that the message of freedom be spread. The only way we see to save the country is to promote a sea change of ideas. Right now this country is stuck in a "save us from ourselves" mentality. The mainstream thinking is that the government is there to protect us from evils (and ourselves). The libertarians and true conservatives (Ron Paul, for example), believe otherwise--that each of us have a responsiblity for ourselves and no one else, that the government is there to protect our liberties.

The current mainstream thinking is that people are all victims to the evil rich and corporations. However, victimhood is just a way of thinking. When you decide to take control of your own life, you realize that blaming others for your problems does not help you at all. The poor continue to do the things that make them poor, while the rich continue to do the things that make them rich. We are all responsible for our own lives. This perhaps is very difficult for most people to swallow, because we are not raised in government schools to think that way.

Mary Ruwart has an excellent book out called "Healing our World" and it makes me feel good that there is a message out there that has such a positlve, healing force behind it. And that's the message of liberty.

I'm sure many new readers have been acquired through this Ron Paul frenzy, and while that's good and fine, it's time to start winding it down now and really start pursuing other avenues of making this website known. I found this website several months ago as a lurker, then again a few months later thanks to a RP search, but I can see when enough is enough.

I mean... 23 thumbs for "For Goodness Sake: Madonna Embraces Ron Paul". Not only is Random Outlier one of the most opportunist and misleading writers when it comes to Ron Paul, but the sad fact is really 23 people actually deemed this stuff essential NC material! This article alone...on the subject of getting readers thanks to mentioning Ron Paul...18 thumbs! Oh my god, honestly?

Alas, the stereotypical argument of RP supporters assaulting the internet would be very effective here. I mean, 90% of the articles here not only preach to choir about issues we already know are crucial, but they make it seem as if Ron Paul is the center of the Libertarian universe. He's not. Dooglio, how is recycling the message through the RP ranks "spreading" it? That's analagous to claiming economic growth comes not from production but forcing existing money into the hands of the poor.

And seeing people attacking Lloyd for speaking his mind, note that though I disagree with him in some areas, and particularly his lack of spelling on an ocassion or two, I feel he has much more of a level head than many of you here. It may surprise you to know that there are some libertarians who DO see Ron Paul as a poor politician. That's not to say they don't respect him personally, and that doesn't need to be taken as a personal insult of insulting our values. The worst part is you guys attack anyone that dissents with you over having "crises of confidence". Call them pessimists, call them trolls, and while often times it may be true, it should be done on a case by case basis, and you should also question if blind support to a man is really logical and a truly "optimistic" stance as one commenter put it.

Oh, and to the Creator, whether the number of times RP is mentioned in one article helps our spot on Google or not, you seem to be disregarding the NC has 4 other sections with 4 other audiences. Not all of them care about RP. This influx of RP supporters isn't entirely bad, but if this generates new columnists posting new RP articles, they might as well branch out and make a RP op-ed site. This site, at least in my view, correct me where I'm wrong, is to foster debate on the issues from all sides of the spectrum, no? Not just add to the rank and file of the rEVOLution?

So it really comes down to whether it is ethical, indeed logical, to plug RP all the time. The quality of articles here is pretty low- ask yourself if that's something you're comfortable with having here at the NC for the long-term. Please note, I don't object to using RP's name at all, but...well, I guess you could say "less is more" in this case and would go a long way in diversifying the columns in the Libertarian section and foster real discussion that will place us leaps and bounds ahead most political commentary sites.

Freedom of speach on the nolanchart is reaching all new fascist levels. It is as if the Ron Paul supporters have issued a fatwa saying "If you are against not totally supportive of every policy that Ron Paul supports , then you are against us!"

Thanks Spence, I apologize for my bad spelling. I gave up on spell checker because most people here don't use it when they write their "professional" articles. I am not trying to be popular at all. I want to destroy irrationality, and unlike most on this website I know that it is irrational to want everybody to agree with you.

The Ron Paul supporters love infighting. They love to go on with boot Boortz campaigns because they can't have a libertarian that supports the war in Iraq. They also hate Reason Magazine because they attempt to be objective from a pro rational libertarian point of view and examine things that are not popular in a way that offends Ron Paul supporters. (Things like Illegal Immigration, Alternative Medicine, the Iraq War, and Ron Paul himself) I just want to know why it is a huge sin to be critical of Ron Paul?

The biggest problem in our world today, and indeed it's scary to think it's as prevalent in RP supporters as it is in neocons is the absolutism of it all. Many, MANY, of my replies have targeted this common thread through thick and thin. It's one of the biggest dichotomies of life to say that absolutism never works, because therefore, it does.

But these guys take it too far. Objective truth is the only constant, absolute truth there is..and even THAT is taken on a case-by-case basis and with other factors in mind. Obviously, in some areas, it's better to ask for absolute ends, but RP supporters, and many self-proclaimed "hardcore libertarians" think that somehow it makes their message somewhat more improved. Distinctive, certainly, but not improved.
