Nora Ephron’s White Men

An analysis of Nora Ephron's incendiary article about white men in the Huffington Post.

Nora Ephron of the Huffington Post wrote an incendiary article about white men and how ironic it is after all our bitching about being powerless in an equal opportunity post-modern society; yet the collective we (because it is a well known fact that white men hold an annual meeting where we hammer out our political agenda and decide which race or gender to hate in the upcoming year), are the "deciders" in the Pennsylvania election.

This is an election about whether the people of Pennsylvania hate blacks more than they hate women. And when I say people, I don't mean people, I mean white men. How ironic is this? After all this time, after all these stupid articles about how powerless white men are and how they can't even get into college because of overachieving women and affirmative action and mean lady teachers who expected them to sit still in the third grade even though they were all suffering from terminal attention deficit disorder -- after all this, they turn out (surprise!) to have all the power. (As they always did, by the way; I hope you didn't believe any of those articles.)

Really?  I guess I was hoping since she wrote for such accredited news organizations like the New York Post and Esquire, she wouldn't resort to Hearst's version of incendiary journalism.

As of 6:20 p.m., CNN's exit polling is showing 92 percent of black democrats voting for Obama over Clinton. Using her line of thinking about white men and their inherent racism, African Americans must be racist since they went for Obama overwhelmingly. See how dangerous and disingenuous this line of reasoning is? The truth is they simply just prefer Obama's version of socialism. Just like 55 percent of white democrat voters prefer Clinton's brand of socialism.

To put it bluntly, the next president will be elected by them: the outcome of Tuesday's primary will depend on whether they go for Hillary or Obama, and the outcome of the general election will depend on whether enough of them vote for McCain. A lot of them will: white men cannot be relied on, as all of us know who have spent a lifetime dating them.

In closing, I'd like to Mrs. Ephron for her scholarly article... and extend my condolences to her husband.

I think that you are over-reacting. As a demographic white men will probably be the swing vote this year. Ephron was being snide and sarcastic, something she does well and makes a lot of money doing.  Something of trademark for her.  Ask her ex-husband Carl Bernstein. She wrote about him cheating on her in a novel and later in a movie.

Last I heard Ephron has been married to novelist and screenwriter Nick Pileggi for over twenty years.  He wrote "Goodfellas", "Casino" and "American Gangster."  Somehow I doubt he need your condolences.
