Hillary Clinton has not only fought against the encroachments of the right wing conspiracy, as she describes it, she has named names.
The most prominent among the names she has mentioned are Rupert Murdoch, with his conservative media empire, Richard Mellon Scaife, whom she apparently googled to identify all his memberships in conservative organizations, and (new this year) Wal mart.
It must be a tribute to her bubbly and outgoing personality that none of these seem to realize that she is their enemy.
Hillary Clinton this year returned a donation to her presidential campaign which had been given by Wal Mart. She did not denounce and repudiate Wal Mart, but she did say that this was not the same Wal Mart at which she had sat on the board of directors, and from which her husband had received donations in his races for Governor of Arkansas and for President. Nor, apparently the same Wal Mart from which she had accepted donations for her senate races in 1002 and 2006. Was that the Wal Mart which did not offer low priced goods even if it meant buying goods produced in China? Was that the Wal Mart which did not pay the lowest wages possible for workers whose jobs could not be outsourced? I don't recall any Wal Mart like that.
I am left with the suspicion that the was led to this action because Wal Mart is one of the villains of choice for the Democratic Party's elite this year. Of course, the working class Democratic voters Senator Clinton is championing still do a lot of their shopping there.
This year also she pressured the Nevada Democratic Party to end its contract with Fox News to broadcast the Democratic Party's pre-primary debate. She was not alone in this, and as far as I know did not instigate. The Democratic National Committee was involved and all of the Democratic candidates. The reason was that Rupert Murdoch, the owner of Fox News was a notorious right winger, and Fox News, the Democrats agreed, employed right wing reporters and analysts who presented a biased view of politics.
Senator Clinton may have been just following the herd (or positioning herself "in the mainstream of the party:, as Democrats like to put it) in the Nevada case. Certainly she had no objections to Mr. Murdoch in 2006 when he hosted a fund raiser for her campaign for re-election to the Senate. Nor did she repudiate or denounce an endorsement by Murdoch's New York Post in the same election.
Although Murdoch and the post Sam Walton bosses of Wal Mart may be a part of the vast right wing conspiracy, Senator Clinton has never identified either as its leader. The vast right wing conspiracy which said that her husband had an affair with Monica Lewinski and was behind the charge of perjury agaist was led, she said, by Richard Mellon Scaife. After it turned out that the the affair and the perjury were valid charges, it was reported that Senator Clinton and Mr. Scaife had had a civil meeting and put the past behind them.
A week ago Tuesday, they met again in the editorial board room of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, which is owned by Mr. Scaife. She said she came because she felt it was counterintuitive and might be fun. For an hour and a half, she answered questions and stated her positions. Mr. Scaife said that he was surprised by the number of issues on which they were in agreement, although mostly these were in the area of foreign policy. He promised his readers that this did not mean that the paper was endorsing her in the upcoming primary, and said that the board would make a decision on endorsement after having a chance to talk to Senator Obama. He praised her courage and competence in coming in. (www.pittsburghlive.com)
Senator Clinton is engaged in a tight tough battle with Senator Obama, and apparently is willing to apply the "Whatever it takes" method to winning in Pennsyvania. Now that it is clear that a large number of Republicans are changing their registration in order to have fun with the Democrats, this effort is not only courageous, it is smart.
A lot of Americans believe that there is a vast oligarchic conspiracy trying to destroy the United States. Liberals tend to refer to it, as Senator Clinton does, as a left wing conspiracy. Conservatives tern to refer to it as a leftist conspiracy. Some believe that it is both.
The message is, however, that if you are planning to make a career of crusading against a conspiracy, you should be a little more cautious about how often you seek and accept help from those you publicly identify a major leaders of the conspiracy.
